I've got a nice pair of castle severn2s one with a blown main driver. now that castle are no longer, does anyone know either where spare drivers can be had OR what would be a suitable generic substitute OR has anyone got the other half of a blown pair to sell as a spare?

Worth trying Recone Labs or Wembley Loudspeakers (google them) as your blown driver can almost certainly be fixed.

I believe that the name is now owned by IAG (Quad, Wharfedalw, Audiolab, Mission etc), so brace yourself for a range of 'Castle' speakers made from best Chinese chipboard.

My spies also tell me that the Castle factory and machinery were sold off at auction some time ago, so no real chance of a resurrection.

    Not good news, sorry.

There is very little wrong with Chinese goods, in fact most of it is very good and also very cheap. That is why you can buy a £30 DVD player in the shops.

Apart from the lead paint and the carcinogenic wrapping.

Start getting used to Chinese stuff. I expect to triple my procurement from China over the next two years.

In the main the quality is good for bog standard stuff and the prices are ridiculously low.

If we stopped importing from China, you would be moaning about the high cost of everything.

    Regards

    Mick,

A huge amount of HiFi is built in China these days, much of it to a decent standard, but I doubt that any 'Castle' speakers that may come out of the new owners of the name will bear any connection with the Castle speakers designed and built in Skipton.

Ask yourself the question why Castle went bust .. answer not enough customers.

Perhaps they should have sourced from China.

Absolutely, Mick. It simply isn't commercially viable to manufacture budget or even medium priced kit in the UK these days. Practically everything HiFi that has a price tag in 3 figures is made in China or similar these days. British manufacturing industry, RIP.

    Ed.

(P.S. I know that there are odd examples of UK product under a grand, I am generalising, so please let's not everybody get pedantic, eh?)
