Hmm...I'm not sure why this had to be so polarised. I'm a cat person for sure but I don't have anything against dogs at all. I really like them too. If we could have a dog, we'd have one aswell as our cats. However, dogs and 3rd story apartments don't mix too well and we simply don't have the time to look after a dog properly.

Cats OTOH pretty much take care of themselves as long as you feed them and clean out their litter tray once in a while.

We have neither. Our appalling (relatively) new neighbours have both. The cats wander over our lawn making a mess and chasing the birds we like to see there. The dogs bark their heads off at the slightest excuse, especially on that most hallowed of pleasures, an alarm clock-free day (see Pet Hates thread). Result: I'm not sure which I hate more, but I think both belong, suitably disguised, on the menus of Chinese restaurants. Just tell me which Chinese restaurants.

Yeah - like that yappy crappy little sh*t next door - if it keeps it up like it was this morning, yesterday, the day before that etc, it's straight in the microwave for it - and I usually only reserve that for small children!

Seriously though, I can't be dealing with cruelty to animals - that includes children, as they come under "monsters".

I dislike MOST dogs with a vile passion. They're just so subservient, dull, boring, and do what they're told. The only good dogs are guide/hearing dogs IMHO, although I'm sure Sid's one was cool (sorry to hear about your loss, Sid).

Cats are king. No contest. If you look after them properly they don't stray to anyone else for food - witness exhibit a) - our old cat, Whisky - she adopted us in 1987 and we finally had to have her put down in 1996 due to kidney failure - she was 21 years old!

She was intelligent enough to knock on the front window to be let back in, she could sort out (and return) her toys, and she LOVED sleeping on your lap or bed - whichever was more convenient. Lhatkins didn't seem to come out in anything untoward when he met her in 1991, which is interesting, as my mum is also SUPPOSED to be allergic to cats, and she got on famously with Whisky :)

There's a lot more to cats than meets the eye! A dog's marking its territory when it takes a dump, so it's showinig no respect for you whatsoever when it dumps on the street; at least a cat will bury a turd in its own territory, because it respects you as it's natural boss, higher up the hierarchy - that's why they tend to dump in other gardens, and NOT bury them, just to show the other "large cats" (ie the owners of said garden!) who's boss :)

I just wish ilockyer'd let me have on in our houseshare as we have a catflap. He's one of those doggy people! ;)

I grow up in Malaysia. When I was very young, my neigbour have a lovely brown puppy. He grows up into a big cute big dog. Energitic and lively.

One day the neigbour's wife bring over plate of meat dish. It was nice. My mom never told me what happen to the nice dog for many years.

Err.... sorry maybe not the appropriate time to tell this story.....

    *sorry Sid but...*

I've eaten dog meat too - and then found out. The kebab van in Reading Uni was punting it (and seagull!) for a bit, and got shut down by environmental health - not before me eating some of it though. It tasted OK. Horse meat is nice as well.

Gotta be dogs. Great to take out for a wander around the countryside of this fair isle. Great for a wrestle and a game of tug o' war, great companions.

Don't forget its the owners that make dogs bad, let them bark all night, let them sht on the pavement, let them eat kids, don't train them, dogs can be a very accurate reflection of their owners. Remember this when you see some chavs staffy straining at the leash and squatting on the pavement. A well trained dog with a good nature/character is a real joy.

The experience of owning a good dog far exeeds that of owning a good cat.

I hate the way people often say cats are 'cool' they're not cool they're just graceful but stupid. This makes people think they are aloof and sophisticated.

That's simply not true. They're different but equally rewarding experiences.

Also, cats are generally just as intelligent as dogs. It depends on the breed though. My norwegian forest cat is far more intelligent than my mate's dumber than dumb cocker spaniel.

Cats are generally not trained the way dogs are (it's not necessary) and they're more independent. That doesn't make them dumb though.

Hmm yeah maybe I'm just not a cat person. I prefer the whole dog thing but maybe that because I like walking and a dog is the perfect companion. Fits in with my lifestyle I suppose.

Did have some cats for a good few years and they are funny little things, one used to compulsively lick the windows and tear the seals out of the double glazed back door. Bloody thing!

Chickens are good and you get eggs too.

I agree with Heavymental about dogs vs cats. I've had both. The dogs are much more fun and there is more point to them. The cat just did what it liked, and we hardly ever saw it. So what was the point?

I guess I like both. At the moment we have 2 cats and we can't have a dog because we live in an apartment and neither of us has the time to look after a dog properly (take it for walks etc). If I lived in the country I'd love to have a dog aswell.

    Got to be dogs..
We've got one (Collie cross Alsation from the Dogs Trust) -he's a great excuse to keep fit by going walkies for at least an hour a day.. He can even cope with a full days mountain biking (bleedin healthy he is..).
And as Heavymental says, there's no such thing as a bad dog - only bad owners.
Folks who go out to work every day leaving their pooch at home alone aren't fit for dog ownership.. It's like having a kid, ffs!
And if you own a dog, especially in towns, you have to be prepared to clean up after it. Luckily we in the country don't have to bother, as the foxes eat it over night (mmmm)..

Nowt against cats, mind - each to their own n'all, but our dog enjoys chasing them whenever one comes near (I don't let him chase sheep though!)

I like both, but am more wary of dogs, after a particulary agressive set of dogs chased after me when I was about 5.
