Waiting for my train to the fleshpots of Zürich this morning, I had a look through some of the big German hi-fi magazines at the station kiosk, and within I found a test on this:

    http://www.harmonictech.com/furutech/RD-2_English_-6-27-02Modified.pdf

They thought it was really good, made a big improvement, etc. As a total unbeliever in such things, I personally wonder what they were drinking and/or smoking at the time (unfortunately undisclosed in the article), but I know that there are some true believers out there, so I pass it on for what it's worth.

P.S. Nobody knows better than I that patents on this sort of thing are meaningless. The applicant claims an advantage, and the patent office will never challenge this, it concentrating on whether the alleged invention is novel, inventive and apparently useful. The only way to kill it on the basis of inutility is to take the patentee to court, and who wants to bother?

I still don't believe in all this crap about magnetism and CDs - never have done never will do. I might try playing my original 1983 issue of David Bowie's Hunky Dory later today, and then use my Milty Zerostat antistatic gun on it to see if I can hear any difference.

    I bet you I can't...

"Lobster sperm" on the other hand does make a difference to some CDs, so not all CD tweaks are complete rubbish...

Hmmm... well I just tried to read through the artical Tones linked to, and I must confess I don't follow all of it. There are though some interesting changes of scale (and associated colour) between the graphs, which I suspect may be somewhat masking what's actually going on. Also, I'm not sure what the SNR values they've tabulated actually are; I mean it can't relly be ~2% can it?

One other thing. They've carefully explained why discs etc. may be magnetised but as far as I can see there doesn't seem to be any mechanism proposed to explain why this affects the sound. Or did I miss it?

Whatever you can safely assume I'm not going to be spending £220 on this toy :D .

No way I would either, Paul, I would just be interested in the lobster's opinion.

Well, I tried playing that David Bowie (I chose that one 'cos it's the earliest pressing I have - it doesn't even have a matrix number on the centre of the disk, and was pressed in Japan). I used "Queen bitch" as the track. It sounded fairly decent, so I took the disk out, zapped it with the antistatic gun, and if anything, it sounded flatter and less musical afterwards... Certainly it wasn't an improvement....

I suppose I could always break out my Nakamich head demagnetizing wand and try that on it - but I'm not convinced. Optical is optical is optical - magneto-optical effects are only relevant in MD if you ask me...
