    Hi,

I have a Marantz SR4300, Mission M71i's and currently play my cd's throught my tosh sd330e DVD. I am thinking of uprgrading and was wondering which of the following people would buy:

    Marantz CD5400
    NAD 521BEE
    Harman/Kardon HD750.

    Thanks Alastair

The Marantz may offer a sound that you like, since you have a Marantz AV receiver. I've just bought the NAD C521BEE and find it a really enjoyable piece of kit, so can definately recommend it. I'm using a Yamaha HTR-5540RDS receiver and Mission m70 speakers.

Don't know about the HK CD player, as I've not heard it.

i'd say you'd struggle to hear the difference between ur Tosh (which ain't too bad with cds IIRC) and your chosen cd players through M71s.

Spend the money on decent cables/supports instead.

No, spend your money on a decent six-month old second-hand NAD C521i. A bit like the immaculate example I've got for sale at a very reasonable £110. Go on. You know it makes sense.

if you did go for this s/h cd player, you could use the difference in your budget to get a s/h stereo amp. the combo would be much better.

I went that route (initially with an AudioLab 8000a) and enjoyed the music more. I then went on an upgrade frenzy, but that's another story.

btw, there are pre-outs to connect the mara 4300 to the stereo amp and hence to the L/R front speakers.

    Second Hand

Where do most people get there second hand equipment from. I am in the Newcastle Upon Tyne area but go to York next week for 10weeks. Also what is the best price people have seen for the NAD, either 521i or 521BEE.

    Thanks

I used to live in the north east, and its a little thin on the ground.

These days Pbirkett could tell you better, but Lintone audio in gateshead and the metrocentre was about it apart from the usual richers/superfi etc.

    Dont know about York, sorry.

A lot of dealers will post, a few will even post on sale or return -

try typing products you want into www.ex-dem.co.uk

    Cheers

Thanks for that, so far lintone audio have it cheapest at £170 for the new BEE model. The problem is that they dont sell on the internet, i go to York on Sunday and live in a very rural area of Northumberland so it is a major journey to the metrocentre, might be going on Wednesday though!

    Alastair,

I'll think you'll find £110 is a good price for a 2nd hand C521i. If you're interested let me know asap. We could always work something out re a courier.

According to their website, you can call Lintone Audio and they will deliver to you anywhere.

You should try and get to the store though. The one in the Metrocentre has quite a bit of second-hand stock.

Out of interest, where in Northumberland do you live? (I'm from Prudhoe).

    Re: Location

Way out yonder then. Must take a couple of hours to get to anywhere from there. Only been up to Otterburn a couple of times - was cold and windy every time! It's probably pretty quiet though (apart from the odd gun fire from the ranges up there!). I live under the flight path of Heathrow now - far flung from rural Northumberland!

You could also try out the Lintone store in Gateshead. Never been there myself, but SWMBO's father swears by it - far better service (the owner is based there) and possibly more discounts to be had!
