Currently ripping CDs to windows media and I have hit a bit of a problem. I have ripped a cd that lists as Take That but is in fact one of my wifes various artists disco things. It plays correctly but is just listed wrongly.Next one up is my sons 100 greatest rock cds and it lists as Blue Oyster Cult? Any suggestions.

    Don't use Windows Media!

I rip to flac using Exact Audio Copy which is complex to set up but perfect every time. You could use Dbpoweramp which is faster and probably just as good.

Generally I find Windows media fine but dont know if this is a cd issue, drive unit issue or other.Dont want to use FLAC or DBPower and dont want complex to set up.Just want to rip a cd and baffled by the result in this instance.

I'd guess that the software gets its information from some external source (don't know the details for WMP, but EAC uses freedb) doing a lookup based on "something" about the CD. Sometimes these lookups are wrong - when it happens to me I just do a bit of tag editing.

Thanks Dick I am guessing it is something along those lines but it was strange that it occured with 3 or 4 cds on the trot. I will attempt to do some editing but as they are my wifes and sons I may just delete them!

The album info is selected on the basis of its TOC, table of contents, so either there are multiple albums with identical running times for each track, order of tracks and total running time, or their database is broken.

I've used Windows Media Player when I was trying to get my head around using the PC as a Hi Fi source. Its database gets itself tied up in all sorts of knots - especially with compilation albums. It sometimes likes to split the tracks up into separate files. Once it has decided what it thinks the album should be like it doesn't matter if you do try to edit the information because WMP changes it back at a later date. It can also be really difficult to delete files form the database. The thing has a mind of its own and takes away far too much user control for my liking. I do know what you mean about having something quick and easy and I haven't yet spent any time with an alternative but I'm only too aware of the pitfalls associated with WMP. When I get around to doing all of this again I will be looking for an alternative.

Windows media player rips as default to my music folder, go there click the album title once so it highlights blue, then click again a second or so later, u can then rename it and windows will show the proper album title.

I'll give that a try but I am slowly coming to the conclusion that Windows Media may be changed fpr Foobar or exact audio.I cannot rip any compilation albums and as there are a few in the house hold I will havet o deal with it.So far I have only ripped 20 or so cds with 7 or 800 to go so I met as well get it right now

Just did a trial with Foobar , I can see the attraction of vinyl, you just pput it on and drop the arm on it! Tried a cd with Foobar and it was taking forever to rip.May give exact audio a try but it on first appearance looked complex,I cannot see how WM can rip a cd in 1 or 2 minutes and Foobar was about 5 for just 2 tracks?

I found EAC to be complex and had problems with the freedb database in foobar.

After much initial trial and error I've got it set up and working fine now, might be able to help if your having issues with EAC as they're probably similar to what I encountered..

I have yet to retrial EAC but I am probably going to peresevere with windows media. I suspect the issue lies with compilation albums so I may have to deal with them in another way.I will continue ripping my wifes cds at the moment and will reconsider when it comes to mine. However I have very few compilation cds in my collection. I did note one funny thing none of the systems I have tried read the cd I was using correctly but itunes had no problem with it so I may reconsider my views on itunes? Maybe I should have bought a "brennan"?
