    Hi everyone.

I have the same problem as Midlife with AOL - can look but can't touch HFC forum as it repeatedly rejects my password. This has been going on for several months now but I still look in.(though less and less as time goes on)

Penance - can you do the same for me and let them know I'm still alive & kicking and stalkin' them. Thanks

    Will

Why don't you e-mail HFC with your problem. Other question, why does anyone use AOL???

I have, but not much joy I'm afraid. Basically they say it's AOL's fault but I never had problems anywhere else.

In the past I tried several ISP's but have been happily using AOL for several years now so I ain't going to change now.

    Thanks anyway.

AOL on a mac is an abomination, I am really suprised they havn't been sued for the serious damage it can do.

Rubbish software, restrictions on email and the f**king annoying woman on the ads all makes for one poor package. Freeserve beats it by a square mile.

This is fast turning into an AOL bashing thread!
Well, there's a lot of justification for it. Their proprietry, restrictive software is anathema to the internet. Unlike the m/s empire of windows which is more difficult to avoid, aol should be junked first opportunity.
Worth checking out http://www.ispreview.co.uk/ for alternatives if you do decide to change

Not an A*L fan here either.
It seems A*L will not accept emails from either my work address or one of my home addresses because of excessive traffic from the server. I wonder if they got burned by a virus and imposed a blanket ban on anything they consider to be a 'corrupt' server?

The problem with AOL is it dosn't use TCP/IP in the same way as any other ISP. AOL uses some modified IBM protocols which is then some how translated back into TCP/IP.

This is why you cannot use a normal router with AOL it just woulnd't work as its not TCP/IP based. This also way Internet Explorer dosn't work with it. In fact AOL is the biggest load of shite ever made after Microsoft Frontpage.

All in my opion of course:D

I've not had AOL MOself, but my girlfriend tried it and found it annoying. I think the uninstalation wasn't as straight forward as normal either, and it had messed up quite a few settings.

yes, you can. yes, it does. and frontpage is great :p

thankfully my experience with AOL is limited to 2 weeks after moving house in december, waiting for BT to activate ADSL on my line. and i've a mate on AOL Broadband, he uses IE perfectly fine (as i did when i was on dialup).

I presume you Trekkies must all use some hi-speed net connection or some new-fangled OS?

My in-laws have AOL on dial-up and its just yer bog standard PPP dial up networking connection.

Simply connect by opening your AOL browser, then open internet explorer [or something better ideally]. If you haven't got an icon, do a START MENU>FIND for 'iexplore.exe' Any version of windows must have one right? Just don't shut down the AOL or it will want to disconnect.

In thoery that shd work, but practice as ever is different.... I have AOL broadband - when I open IE with AOL running it doesn't find any connection. So I still can't get to post on HFC (only site however that I've ever had problems with, so they must also be doing something a bit odd)
I can't get excited about ISPs and AOL is generally convenient and has some good features like spam blocking and child protection filters. I've had my email addresses on aol for a few years and could not face the hassle of contacitng people if I changed address, so they've got me!

Microsoft (c/r)untpage is a pile of cack - AT is right. We had to use it for a year when I started here; non-standard code, poor preview, sluggish, bad utilisation of server space (stupid vti_* folders DOUBLING the server space used!

AOL is the nearest you'll get to a legal virus; once installed on your computer, the only way to successfully remove it is to reformat and reinstall the OS. Otherwise AOL will keep popping up, trying to reinstall itself and just be a total PITA. I used AOL for a few months in 1997 and it was so non-standard it wasn't even funny.

I'd "do" Connie from the AOL ads though (so she's stupid, but...) :)

Thanks guys - there's me thinking AOL was ok :)

Anyway, not computer literate enough to go through all the hassle of finding a new isp and as I said, I find AOL spot on for the rest of the things I do.

Just don't use it for HFC though.

Think I'll pitch my tent here for a while - hope you all don't mind as I haven't done much posting here to date.
