just sold myCD7Q on t'internet and have cleared £700.

i have done this because i want to concentrate on vinyl.
my set up is as follows

    gyro se T/T
    originlive silver250 tonearm
    benz micro mCsilver cart
    creek phono stage

    cyrus aca7.5 pre amp
2x cyrus apa 7 mono blocks
    cyrus icon x4 speakers

    now.......

do i send the apa's off to cyrus to get upgraded to X spec this costs £350 per mono?
do i get a psx-r for the aca7.5 and a better cart or motor for the T/T?
do i try and sell the icons and the apa's then get some ATC active speakers?
BTW i am selling off all my CDs aswell which should swell the coffers by at least £600 so add that to whatever you think i should do

    cheers for the advice chaps

p.s. i have posted this on a number of other forums just to get a varied view

Based on my experience, an outboard PSU for the TT. You could afford an Orbe platter as well within a £700 budget. Result is excellent.

That's what I'd do. Biggest bang for the buck IMO.

Is your Gyro a recent DC model or an older AC one? If the latter, you'll need to get the motor changed in order to use the Michell external PSU. Probably worth doing anyway, the DC motor is generally thought to be an improvement in itself, even without the PSU upgrade.

i have heard good things about the originlive T/T motor kits (mainly from themselves mind you!).

do you have any knowledge of their kits?

No idea, I'm afraid. The Michell motor replacement is probably cheaper.

The new HR PSU is about £300 I believe, cheaper than the VC/QC supplies it replaced.

Call the Michell factory directly, ask to speak about used/ex dem Orbe platters and the like.

You will find if you take/send your gyro to Borehamwood you can upgrade for much much less.

The chap Ive met there (BoB?) only works mon/tues/weds 9 till about 4.

    NB
Do you fancy posting your second hand CD's on zerogain?
    :)

I have seen an upgraded platter from michelle that was classed as a second, but you really could not see why it was a second, they onbviously have very high quality control.
Might be worth enquiring about that.

i dont sorry, i may be able to find out but i dont see the guy very often.
I can say that he thought it a worthwhile reduction in cost.
The platters are apparently made in 2 parts and somehow joined together. This one was rejected because apparently the line of join could be seen, but for the life of me i couldnt spot it.

i don;t know much about these things but would a better phono stage be a wise move to make? the creek looks to be a bit outgunned in that company. but then i am a mere neophyte in the way of vinyl.
    cheers

i'm sure you are right about the creek. however, i want a revelatory improvement from my next upgrade.

i have heard many different arguments. some say the motor is the biggie, others the cart and of course the stage.

i am worried that a simple upgrade of say a trichord dino would just be 'nice' and not really 'POW!'

    ya folla?

i think for POW (fully automatic), you may need to look at more than one upgrade, but still treating each as an individual upgrade.

    2nd time lucky...

Call the Michell factory in Borehamwood.

I bought a second platter (that looked no different), had my motor refurbed, suspension changed, toroidal transformer replacement, new arm board all for xxxx money.

Let me put it this way, with your budget, Id have had enough for a new phono stage aswell!

Sorry mate, my limited hifi store visits only include Sevenoaks Norwich, Martins hifi( u should pop in to check out their B&W nautilis 800 series-they even have the 11k Nautilus' on demo:eek: ) and of course....richersounds norwich when i fancy a lollipop:D

Im sure Rozzar/Rory can fill u in with info on Signals of Ipswich as he lives there:cool:

The thing with upgrading to ATC's, you will have to stick with active speakers in the future and cant upgrade say, just speakers or a new power amp? Having said that i have read very good things about ATC speakers, they always recieve excellent reviews and the metal cabinets on some of their models look the mutts nuts:D

I'd start with the deck rather than the phono stage. The Creek's plenty good enough to reveal improvements to the deck.

A new Orbe platter is around £400 I think, but as has been said, Michell will sell you a basically faultless second for less than that. They bond two Gyro platters together to produce the Orbe platter, and reject anything that isn't perfect, but you'd be hard pressed to spot the imperfect ones.

If you're contemplating the platter you really should do the PSU at the same time - my guess is the PSU is a bigger improvement, but with £700 you could do both. I bought my Gyro s/h with the Orbe platter already in place, and added the PSU within about a month. Big improvement.

As already said, if you have an older AC model Michell will slot the new DC motor into the existing motor housing for a reasonable price.

What you'll end up with isn't quite an Orbe but it isn't far off. Not bad for the relatively modest outlay. As bottleneck says, give them a ring and arrange a visit if you can - very nice people to deal with.

Yes I've heard the uprated motor on the Gyro deck is rather good, I believe the power interconnect is some what enhanced too, a better phono stage, micro groove, Dino +/Lenham cube maybe a speaker change ?/ and or amplifier hike.
