I fancied getting a second CD player for playing CD-RW's.

I have had a look around and found the following 2 -

    SONY SCDXB790QS CD/SACD PLAYER
    http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/1649

    MARANTZ CD7300 CD PLAYER
    http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/1619

I have never heard either of them so hopefully someone has, and provide me with some feed back.

I must admit I am drawn to the Sony for it's SACD capabitlities. I have got a Tag AV32 with the 5.1 By-pass.

So I guess I am asking what you all think about the two modals.

    Thanks for any input.

    Cheers

Don't know about either, but I can also confirm that the NAD C521BEE/C542 both play CD-RWs. The C542 also offers HDCD decoding.

Either the Sony or the Marantz would be decent, I'd have thought. The QS range of Sony gear seems well respected.

Best thing to do is to try and audition as many as possible and decide with your ears!

There aren't that many CDPs that won't play CD-RWs. Even my ancient (1990) Marantz CD50SE played them - I'm not even sure that CD-RWs existed when it was made but that didn't seem to be a problem.

I've had a number of recent Cd-players and none would play Cd-RW's - something to do with the low reflectivity of the dye used.
They all played CD-r's without problems - is this what you mean Michael?

My crappy little DVD player does play everything though !!

    Hi

Have you spoke to the nice people at whats left of tag, there may be a software\firmware upgrade you can load up to make the thing play CD-RW's.

Just a money saving straw clutch!!

Legzr1, I'm pretty sure my old Marantz played CD-RWs aswell as CD-Rs allthough I may have mis-remembered.

the Sony 790QS isn't very good at playing CDs- about the same standard as a £150 cd player bearing in mind it retails for £300. However, it is good at playing SACDs

the Marantz is a much better all round player and also plays MP3 cds..

I'm 99.9% certain that it would do, my CD80 and CD94 play them with no problems. They were produced long before CDRW discs were invented.

    I stand corrected :)
I owned a Marantz 17 ki for a while which wouldn't recognise a disc being present if it was a CD-RW.
    A friend experienced the same with a 67se and a 63 ki.
Maybe the older models are less fussy.

    hi there!

for little money you can get a NAD 521i second hand that beats (imho) any cheap new cd player (if you don't want sacd). the older 521 might not play CD-RWs.

if you want sacd then why not go for a Pioneer 575? It will play all kinds of formats, including DVD-A and it does a very decent job at the new formats, and a great job at playing dvds, dvd-rs and dvd-rws (I know because I have the 565 which is basically the same thing). The cd replay is not as good as the NAD though.
