I imagine everyone will place the line between decent quality and cost in a different place, but I'm interested to know what the cheapest system you could live with would be if you were forced to.

You might be able to live with a £5 Woolworths clock radio if you had to, but that's not the idea - let's say you've got to spec a minimum of your choice of source/amp/speakers, more if you wish. Second hand is fine. No upper price limit, but be honest - imagine you really were stuck for cash.

Am I suffering from déjà vu, or have I seen this question before recently?

MO! had a thread trying to spec a system for £200, if that's what you're thinking of?

I'm more interested in the level of quality people would be prepared to drop to if they had to, some might not even be prepared to change their own systems!

well I guess you 'make do' when the devil ****es in your porridge.

    I could live with:

    rega planar/rb250/mc15 150
    project valve phono 150
    cheapo used marantz cd63 75
    cheap chinese valve amp 250
    some ruark talisman II's 250

all as used as possible if I was hardup.

cables would be any kind, and the supports would be whatever I could get for next to nothing.

If money became tight wouldn't you just keep your system?

Well I have been happy to live with a Dansette for short periods (I had it in my old camper van), but that isn't what you are asking is it

If I had to sell the big rig and get something cheap what would I do?
Rega Kytes, Pioneer PL12D, Denon 103, Naim MC boards and a Nait 3. Should be less than £500. Some solid core mains wire, and some home made interconnects should see it right.

I've got a feeling my upcoming system is gonna sound pretty damned nice for the money:-

    EMU 0404 soundcard (PC source)
    Exposure 20 Amp
    Mordaunt Short MS10i Pearl Speakers
Maplin Van Damme 2.5mm speaker cable
Cheapo interconnects from a Pro Audio store
    Gale T50 speaker stands

Less than £350 for all that :D

Would be a system I used to have:
    Rotel RB 965BX CD player
    Audiolab 8000a amp
    Epos ES11 speakers
    And some cheap wire

Made a great sound IMO probably £500 worth now.

We've got a cyrus system in the spare room for the games console. That was a couple of grand but I wouldn't want to listen to music on it.
