The Sony fixed laser mechs are excellent.
I bought a Sony CDPX3000ES recently and the innards look impressive. I'm about to attack it with a PFM Flea power supply and new clock so watch this space. The Sony ES machine goes for £200-300 on eBay but some of the QS range have the same transport and you can pick them up for £100.

Having owned a Pioneer DV 575a, I would say it's superb for a Budget Transport. My only complaint being it's seems to a bit noisy, so if you are into classical music, or you sit close to your transport,it will probably drive you nuts. In the end I purchased a 2nd hand Meridian 500 MK2 from ebay for around £400. The difference wasn't hugh, it's just had a warmer sound, and better timing. I've since put a Trichord Clock4 & NC Supply inside the 500,which put it on another level all together. If you want it cheap, get the pioneer.
