Are they all duff or are they some good ones? Two of my favourites are Kirsty McCall and The Pogues "Fairy tale of new york" and Simon and Garfunkel's "Silent Night".

Both songs are rather depressing too. I think songs like Merry Christmas everybody are ok if you're in a good mood however its also a depressing time of year for a lot of people and I think songs like Fairy Tale of New York reflect that.

Though my christmases are usually ok. I am determined to enjoy this one for a change. It just gets harder to enjoy especialy as you get older. And Cliff Richard sat there singing about Santa just annoys me.

i want cliff richard to win. I hate him with a passion, but i also detest everything else in the charts at the mo, so would be good to at least stop gareth gates or whatever else winning :)

Cliff Richard is quite simply an odd one. The guy himself is actually really nice in person (I've met him) but I just think he has spoilt things in the last 20 years. His early stuff was good (for the time) and showed some unique energy. The last 20 years though he has just released a string of duffs with a couple of half decent efforts.

Living Doll to me is amazing record as it was recording in the late 50's (58) but when you listen to it it sounds like Cliff is actualy in the room singing. Its a very simple song so its easy for even basic HIFI systems to reproduce well.

    Much Christmas music is rubbish.

However, there are a few good ones (And the observant amongst you will notice they're all from one concert a few years ago):

John Popper and Eric Clapton - Christmas Blues
    Eric Clapton - Christmas Tears
Tracy Chapman - O Holy Night
Sheryl Crow and Eric Clapton - Merry Christmas Baby

But that's where you're wrong chap, there are some good(ish) eggs if you look hard enough:

    Low – Christmas ep
This is rather lovely, especially their version of Little Drummer Boy and their own song 'Just like Christmas' which is all about how christmassy Norway is compared to Sweden.

    Shonen Knife – Space Christmas
Great 7" by cutesy female japanese trio

Angel Corpus Christi – I still feels like Christmas
Stupendously ltd lathe cut 7" (30 copies or so), but nice nevertheless

    V/A – It's a cool cool christmas
One for the indie-kids... 21 festive tracks by the likes of Flaming Lips, Belle and Sebastian, Grandaddy, Calexico, Saint Etienne, Teenage Fanclub, Eels...

A very good one is 'Mount Fuji Christmas' by Paul Gilbert.

Yep - they're my two favourites that I can play in front of my folks.

Santa Claus you c*** is the BEST track though...

Quite often I get to thinking
How us kids - how we got by
Like at christmas time at our house
we couldn't even afford a fire
But we made do with what we had
back then when I was young
Dad used to suck a peppermint
and we'd all sit around his tongue
We couldn't afford no sparkly tinsel
    for our old christmas tree
So we'd just wheel our granddad in
and make the old c*** sneeze
    <aaaaaathcooo!>
<"round around the other side nana">
    <aaaaaathcooo!>
    Things changed pretty bloody quick
I've got kids now of me own
And I heard them unwrap their presents
Last night when I got 'ome
    ...
    Hey Santa Claus you ****
    Where's me ****ing bike
I've unwrapped all this other junk
and there's nothing that I like
    I wrote your ****ing letter
and I've come to see ya twice
    You one eyed geriactric fart
    you forgot me ****ing bike!

Etc etc - I'm not going to say the rude bits, but that's the start of it....

OH yeah, and for the record - I love the Darkness' album, but their crimbo single is utter crap.

And also for the record, Cliff's "Move it" is one of the best ever tracks IMHO - of late he's sucked, but that tune has real energy for a 50s tune... Excellent sound considering it was recorded on just 2 tracks - on the very same equipment they used to record the Beatles' "Please please me" - in 585 minutes.

The Young Ones : "# LIVING DOLL!"

Not a fan of The Darkness, don't think much of their Christmas single, but I'd put some money down on it being number one.

I'd put money down on burning the master disc (since they don't use tape unless you're called The White Stripes these days :( ).

(Cliff) # Right guys, the instrumental break0
(Vyv) # AH GREAT! Which instruments do ya want us to break
    ((P)Rick) # Piano!!!
    (Neil) # Violin <scheetz scheetx scheetx>
    (?) # Didgeridoo (sp??) <gongscklassssh>

Damn I want that track - the B side is excellent! Even better than the non-christmas Chicken Song - only bummer with the chicken song is the 12inch mix really DOES go on for a week - I own it! ;)

I own the actual 7 inch, and a taped copy of the 12 inch somewhere. :)
