    Hi,

One of the alltime greats of Reggae music has past away. The man was responsible for helping to shape Jamaican music into the world force & influence that it is today.

He produced & worked with some of the biggest names in Ska, Rocksteady & Reggae music. He help to launch the careers of Bob Marley & the wailers, The Skatalites, Lee Perry, John Holt, Alton Ellis, Jackie Mittoo, Burning Spear, Freddie Mcgreggor, Ken Boothe, Horace Andy, Dennis Brown and many more.

He owned & setup the famous 'Studio One' record studio which produced a long string of high quality music. His contribution to popular music is huge.

Clement was better known as Sir Coxsone after his love of cricket. He admired the yorkshire batsman Alex Coxson. From an early age he had a good love of music. His parents run a bar and he would have music playing into the shop. To get more customers in, he would put the speaker outside of the door way, so music played in the street.

Clement was a entrepreneur. He would go to the USA to find work in the sourthern States. While he was there, he would pick up the latest Jazz & Rhythm & Blues records. Back in Jamaica, he built up a sound system to play at dances & parties. He soon became one of the early big sound system operators. Is system was called Sir Coxsone Downbeat. It was part of the big three systems in Jamaiaca in the late 50s to early 60s.

Due to demand of the music he was playing & the drying up of releases in the USA, the decided to record his own stuff. This lead to him setting up the world famous Studio One label & record record studio in 1963. From there came 1000s of records covering the the whole spectrum of Reggae music, helping to pioneer the sounds & styles that have entertained generations around the world.

His influence has helped shape popular music. He has directly & indirectly influenced many. Dub mixes, discos, hip hop, remixes, Two Tone, Ska Punk through to rock & pop music all benefited from his input.

Clement Dodd, died of a heart attack aged 72. This was only a few days after they name a street after his famous studio.

    Sir Coxsone. R.I.P.
