This isn't true, in my opinion.

There is nothing disrespectful, or undignified about making a phone call.

It is disrespectful if someone collecting market research, or looking for a sale acts rudely towards you.

To pre-empt such behaviour with your own rude or agressive behaviour.. well, that only lowers your own level of dignity and self esteem.

Chris, I wouldn't generalise. Some are polite, if they work for reputable company but there are others who won't take no for an answer. Takes all sorts.

But I think it IS an invasion of your privacy.

AS Mr.Cat says my telephone is there for to make MY life easier, not so that some one can call me in my (valued) free time and try to sell something/extract personal information form me.... especially when they are manipiluative and devious ......which they often are.......

    IMO THIS IS disrespectful.

    its possible....

Brevity even abruptness are well in order though.

Th snag is (IME) you ahve to listen to a couple of minutes of spiel before you realise for sure what the score is....

.....ie. "hello, mr.XYZ ..............how.... are ....you?"

"fine thankyou. How can I help you?"

    etc, etc.

after a couple of minutes I'm very unamused.
