Very sorry to hear it but the writing was on the wall for him. He was about the only person in the Bush government I had any respect for. Now the neo-cons have full control - a scary thought indeed :(

Of course, one of the problems with him was that no-one in the US seemed capable of pronouncing his name properly - they can't say 'Collin' only 'Cole-in'!

Personally I never liked him - that torrent of lies that he spewed out at the UN in the build-up to the Iraq conflict really showed his true colours IMO. It was all so laughably untrue and yet he sat there reading his script with a straight face throughout

'Moderate' in relation to people like George W and Cheney may sound good in the media, but he has still presided in administrations which were responsible for mass murder/genocide in South America and the Middle East. All politicians are scum really, it's just a question of how they rate on the big ScumScale.

Like most people who have been responsible for atrocities, he'll probably live to a ripe old age and be revered as some kind of noble statesman (Ronald Reagan's recent departure comes to mind). Good riddance I say.

I liked Powell too. I think that there may be two less neo-cons (Cheney and Rumsfeld) come January, though.

I think to be fair he probably hated lying to the UN but was pretty much forced to do it. I don't think it showed his try colours at all.

I can hardly believe I'm defending a Republican, and a military man at that (me being a pacifist) but IMO he was a sound bloke.

To quote Collin Powell when asked what would happen were he ever to run for President, "I would be dead."

    Scary stuff indeed.

What with the recently televised murder of an unarmed injured iraqi by an american soldier with a personal score to settle, I'm wondering if he knows something we don't. Chanel 5 news also showed a different incident which showed a US soldier killing a cornered and injured iraqi insurgent without apparently giving him the chance to surrender. Makes you wonder just how much these breaches of the geneva convention are going on in iraq. Not that the US cares about such things as they chose to be the only "civilised" western power not to sign up to a recent act which would allow them to be charged with such things.

I have to say I was completely sickened by these images/reports.
