Are you actually picking them up from the studio in Stockport (or some place close by)?

It's a good sign that they are still under the ownership of the origfinal studio. I would have been a bit concerned if they'd spent time with a second owner after the studio decommissioned them.

I really don't think you will find they have been tampered with that much compared to when they were first installed.

Also, I saw a reference on the web that Pluto Studios was located above 10cc's Strawberry Studios. The plot thickens...

I hate to see a fellow Tannoy fan suffer, so as a huge favour I can store them for you in my, er, garage. Anything to save your marriage. When do you want to bring them around?:D

Do I get a finders fee...at least let me listen to them one day.:)

A bit of Toto "Hold The Line" sounds great with JBL double 15''s.

I'd get that original photo from the eBay advert framed for the house as I piss myself laughing every time I look at it. I don't think marketing is the sellers strong point. He didn't even get the things level on those dustbin "stands".

    So I'm still confused:
what is neutrality and why should we aim for it?

Well they're here and look as rough as a bears arse-very solid but unfinished-very very unfinished.
Stripping them down tonight-will start a new thread soon as.

Is the front baffle supporting the woofers demountable from the front (as these where soffit mounted) - there are slots top and bottom on this panel.

Any hints as to who actually made them?

Well the whole thing is screwed together 18 layer(?)1" marine ply-it looks very like the construction methods from the JBL guides and feels reasonably dead but I'll add a mid'ish placed figure of 8 bracing shelf I think.
I hope the front baffle is removable or undoing the large metal strap securing the 2440 in place will be a sod, there's also 3105 xover on the highs that looks to be a sealed unit(wax?).
The 2440 hf units are so substantially built/huge I was gobsmacked.
These 'are' the monitors from Pluto above Strawberry and have had loads of great stuff done on them-Kieth H said anything recorded there came through these so I'm gonna dig deeper.
The 2231a cones look original and although the re-foam is on the front it is a very good and tidy job.The 2397 is sealed to the baffle with frameseal so will need cleaning up.
The box volume is about 275L which is ok from the T&S for the 2231's.
It is a largish job but from the short blast I loved what I heard...

All sounds great. So you got to meet Keith H as well - the story gets better and better. How long have they had the monitors in storage as the UREI replacements look like they have been installed for a while.

Even though the woofers may look good, there's a fair chance the spider is nearly knackered and that can only be solved with a full recone. I know what you mean about the build quality of the 2440, welcome to the world of JBL overengineering that prevailed in the 70'2 and 80's. My 250Ti's weigh 70kg and the woofer is abot 15kg of that alone.

I like the idea of an active crossover on the woofer to mid and then a passive on the mid to high. It may well work better than a digital crossover so is worth keeping to start with.

How would you describe the sound you heard...BIG I imagine!

Can you post some hi-res pictures. Wish I ived nearby as I'd be over for a look and listen. How's the wife taken it all..

Sound was very even top to bottom(short listen only)but it was massive-bigger than the 215's-I only managed to check them one at a time.
They did that solar plexus bass that only JBLs can do so they might be staying;-)
What I wasn't expecting was the smoothness from the horn(again just from listening to a couple of tracks only)I expected a forward nasalish mid but none of it so far.
The top end was sweet at least as good as the 215's.
The better half is collecting a beautiful ring from the jewelers on monday so job done I think so long as I do a makeover on them.
Kieth H was a really sound bloke-chatty,friendly, showed my muso/guitarist lad around the studio and revealed that they actually chucked the Clash out and refused to have them back after JS smashed the control room window.

That's so funny. You should have got a photo of you and Keith loading them out of the studio.

I first heard some JBL studio monitors in the early 80's, drivers were probably about the same vintage as yours. All I remember is a great big warm sound that just rocked.
