Hey computer people I have a small problem........

Ive just had a new cnc cleaning machine installed which uses a mitsubishi E200 NIC unit. Unfortunatley the machine cannot hold as many recipies as we need so at the mo we're using an old laptop which has the same software as the machine. This causes a few problems, as only two of us have the passwords to download data from the laptop it means running out on the shop floor, hooking the lappy up and doing what is required.

Ive installed the software on the PC nearest the machine (about 30 foot away) so I was wondering what is needed to make a serial connector over that distance. Would Cat 5/6 be okay? What else is going to be required. I cant see why it shouldnt be simplish. Can take piccies if needs be

using UTP Cat5 you should be able to have a run of up to 147feet (assuming the CAt 5 cable has a capacitance of 17pf/ft), sh should be fine.
The standard spec say maximum baud rate is 19200 and to achieve this you should not exceed 50feet (so still ok for you), maximum capacitance of the cable should not exceed 2500pf

It's not clear what sort of communication connection is required. But RS232 and any Ethernet will all be fine over that distance. I'd suggest buying a suitable cable ready made. Post the details and perhaps we can give more comprehensive pointers.

RS323 may be a little slow, although it should be fine for low bandwidth stuff such as this.

Ethernet is the way to go to though, if it just PC to PC then CAT5 Cross Over stuff is what you need, otherwise you will have to buy a hub etc.

Avoid wireless as its not totaly secure even with all the security protocols such as WEP enabled.

It sounds like all you really need is a cheap £5 CAT cross over cable, RS323 cables are also more expensive than CAT5 so unless the software does not support Ethernet it would probably be pointless goign down that route.

if your using serial ports to make the link then you may well need a null modem cable, dont think cat 5 has enough cores, but 10 core overall screened cable aint too expensive.
    wot pins to connect
