    Is my PC worth anything?

It cost a small fortune about 4/5yrs ago. It was supposedly quite 'cutting edge' at the time (i think a 700 was the best available when i got it), though now i suppose it is pretty redundant and worth about the price of a packet of skittles.

    P.Bell
    Its a Pentium III 500
    128Mb
    7.5Gb
    Voodoo III (?) graphics card
TV software stuff and loads of other nonsense
    DVD drive
    CD/CDRW drive (can't remember specs)
    56k modem
    Windows 98
    floppy drive
The case is ginormous and could fit a small child in it.
    17" monitor
    HP printer (2/3yrs old) - a Kodak one - pretty decent i think. 9** series (?)

I don't know much about these things.

Is it worth anything as scrap or not?

    Thanks

cheers. I thought as much. :(

Are they worth anything to a charity/school?

Or is it really a skip job? Ebay is too much aggro.

    Stupid technology.

    Options:

    1. Scrap it and throw it away as it really is worth bugger all
    2. Use it just for internet work or as a music server. It would need more ram and a bigger hard drive to do this, but it would be difficult. More to the point, being a somewhat slower processor than is now available, stick a new heatsink on it, and it's likely to be very quiet.
    3. Find a worthy group to donate it to, e.g. local school, charity.

Personally I've just acquired a PC with a Duron 700 in it, and will be seeing if I can set it up as a games machine for the lounge (has a TV output). It's still fast enough to run older games (e.g. micro machines), which means it could work as the equivalent of a Playstation, but basically for free. If that works out, might consider the idea of installing a TV in card and using it as a Hard Disk video recorder.

Hey Cookie, does this mean you're leaving the world of "The Net" too, or do you already have a replacement PC? :)

Rory - I'm going to see first if there is a charity or something of that ilk which could benefit since it isn't worth anything. :) Hope thats ok.

HenryT - i have barely used this PC in 3 years. It has seen a can of Pledge more frequently than it has served any useful function. I bought it as a student, thinking i needed one. I mainly used it for games in the end, which just facilitated my student downfall ironically.

I use the PC at work. Its fast and free. When i'm not at work, i don't bother. So pray for a long holiday. :D

sorry chaps, i've been in negotiations with the wife, and it turns out that she wants to keep it for a while, as she still uses word/excell for work occasionally. And with a house move on the horizon, and the bills piling up behind the door, the purchase of a laptop will be delayed for a bit, so the big lump will have to remain in situ 'till we move.

I'm been using it a little bit the last couple of days to post here, though 56k is uber-slow, and its a bit of a distraction at home.

    cheers

    Hi CM,

If you're after something faster, you can have one of my PCs. It's 1.3GHz with 20GB HDD.

It's currently running SuSE Linux 8.2 Professional but I'm sure a man of your calibre will have no problem replacing that with MS wotsits.
