before anyone says, I know a lot of bands don't allow taping of their shows... but I came across this on the Hayseed Dixie (they play metal numbers in a bluegrass style very well) website... they approve of it... but some of their suggestions on what to tape with are worth a look... some seriously obsolete technology here!

The Ampex multitrack was a great machine for those who like it warm...
For older technology I'd always recommend the 2 Rolls Royces of analogue stereo tape recording - the Nagra 4S (being portable makes it very handy, and the only thing that will beat it for recording quality is:)
    the Studer A8 - though it's a big fella..
If money's not too tight and you want multitrack then the Studer 2" 24 track is the beast.
And you can buy a Nagra 4s for about £1k!!!!

The first time I read about these I was very tempted to get a set, but have never gotten around to doing it (nor have I reallly had the balls to sneak a recorder into a major gig yet):

Mind you, what with the advent of PDA's/mobile phones/etc which can record onto solid state memory, maybe you might have more of a chance of getting away with it as your recorder isn't just a recorder anymore. :MILD:

Was the Nagra 4S what Jules uses to record the concert of Cynthia Hawkins in the film "Diva"? I know its a Nagra because that's mentioned in the film, but not sure which model. An absolutely outstanding film btw in case anyone hasn't seen it: IMDB link.

Yes, a Nagra IV was used I think, and not only for Cynthia Hawkins, but also for a rather large proportion of my record collection :)
You wouldn't want to use a Lavalier mic for recording a concert, though.
