Hi HenryT,
The Motown cd is a fairly recent release. Motown was a label that had a huge hit per release ratio. But there were record that didn't sell well or chart. Add to this, the many session of unreleased material. The stuff is from the golden age of Motown. The mid 60s. Have a look here.

Candi Staton has been recording since the 50s. Her stuff up till around the late 60s is mainly gospel. From around late 60s till mid 70s, she recorded on the Fame label. This is the stuff on the CD that I was listening to. In the Mid 70s, she was signed by Warner Bros. It was during this period that she had her biggest hit, 'Young Hearts run Free'. She recorded albums throughout the 70s & 80s. Other bit hits include 'Nights on Broadway' & 'Suspicious Minds' She move back to more gospel stuff in the 80s.
The tune by the Source used the vocals from a record that Candi had out in the mid 80s. The uplifting vocal fitted the the dance tune to produce a classic. She has recorded a few dance/soul albums since then.
Candi Staton has an very emotive voice & this makes her one of the most under rated soul singers going. One of my favourites.
