If you want an honest opinion, you seem to be making little tweaks to your system here and there, changing the DAC etc, What is it about you existing system that you don't like, maybe going back to some first principles might help?

I dunno - it's all this overtime I doing - I just have an overwhelming urge to upgrade...

plus it does seem a bit of a bargain... 8o)

At the end of the day its your money, in your shoes I would save up my overtime for a significant upgrade(s) rather than spending it a little at a time. Then you could go out, dem some serious kit, decide what you like and chose to buy new/ex-dem/s-h ...But as I said its your choice.

If you look on the eBay completed listings maybe £350 is not such a bargain after all...

Make sure you have a listen first. I had a Cyrus 7 a while back and its a decent amp IMHO, but it sounded a bit raggeddy around the treble end with KEF Q-series speakers - maybe not the best pairing for either.

    Cheers

You would need to get a simple little passive pre, shouldnt cost much.

Still got my Cyrus 7 + PSX-R. I'd say 350 is the upper limit of what you might pay. Around 300 would be considered a good deal.

In terms of its performance. Plenty of power for its size, decent current output. I wouldnt say its raggedy in the treble. Certainly was not shamed at by my Lavardin IS Ref. Whilst not as powerful or well controlled (bass wise) as my Krell integrated, it is arguably more lively. I like the 7 amp a lot.

I think you can get better than a Cyrus 7 for £350 notes these days.

350 is a popular price point for amps I think. Care to expand on the alternatives you might recommend?

For just a bit more you could try the Ming-Da M34A, or a second hand Icon 40i. Wonderful sounding amps. On the flip side of the coin that money should buy a Naim 32/42/62 with either a 110 or a 140, again a cracking combination. Densen Beat anyone as well. Saw an Audio note Zero Pre and Mono blocks for £500 the other week. There's lots of good stuff that approaches the high end available if you go looking.

yeah, the main criteria is that the amp can be a direct replacement for my nad - in the sense that it would continue to drive my main speakers, and be able to connect to the av amp whilst watching dvds...

I havent listened to one, looks a bargain. I'd be interested to compare one to the Cyrus 7, same output and I guess the same target market.

thats exactly what i'd reccomend !

I'd add in vintage amps like leaks, quads, Beard p35's etc - and of course new amps from china from places like cattylink.

I think valve amps at this price range dont have much competition from domestically produced solid state (solid state from china..places like cattylink again being the exception..)
