Just Tried A Few Of Each, Please Comment On This As To Witch You Think Is Better...!
Without a doubt FM, particularly 70's ones with big dials. They sound great and much better than any quartz locked, chip based later ones. Get a good Marantz, Pioneer or Sansui, and you'll wonder why you asked the question. Have a look here: www.fmtunerinfo.com It's proper porn I tell ya
i agree with you that analogue is better, i had a maratnz in the late 70's , also H/.K. they were super, but since i have being persuaded by "digital" friends to try and prove my point , got hold of a few dab's and try to show them the difference, pain no gain,..!
I agree with Richard, get a top end Japanese 70s design and perhaps buy a cheap DAB portable with a line or phones out so you can plumb it into the hi-fi.
i have, got a LUXMAN T80V, M.F.X-PLORA, BUT I AM TRIYING TO PERSUADE MY FRIENDS THAT ANALOGUE TUNERS ARE BETTER BUT TO NO AVAIL, P.S. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED:my kit: T.T.-AVID ACUTUS, SME309, AT OC10 CART. NU-VISTA 3D CD, PLUS KW25 TRANSPORT AND DAC, TUNERS AS MENTIONED, NU-VITA M3 INTEGRATED FOR THE TREBLE, NU-VISTA 300'S PWR FOR THE BASS, PROJECT SE PHONO STAGE, CASTLE WINCHESTERS, "SPECIAL EDITION" AND LOADS OF VINYL, OLE...
I agree ...but with them shutting down fm in the near future I'd get a good dab with a roof mount ariel ,much the same as you would for a top fm. Sound quality on dab can be gross but 5live is much better than on am!
The analogue shut down seems to have been shuffled down the priority list. I'd get a freeview box with digital out for some of the excellent new digital stations in addition to a decent analogue box.
There isn't one, and the latest suggestions are that R3 and R4 may well survive, that was in the Times a couple of months ago on the airwaves column I think.
Excellent news, those are the only two channels I care about! Nothing will be happening soon anyway – the TV situation is very different and has a deadline of 2012 IIRC, but there is no such deadline for FM radio. I suspect it will last for many years yet. Tony. (owner of a huge 70s Japanese tuner)
i spoke to someone about this morning regarding info as to when it will stop, his answer he gave me was that the powers that be can only control bbc stations but not independant broadcasters, for all is worth , we are still in limbo.
I've been led to understand that these frequencies have been allocated to the emergency services/armed forces, for various digital coms. This has been done for exactly the reasons you mentioned ie only the BBC can be told to stop. The others will then fall under the laws regarding disruption of emergency/ armed forces coms. The prosecution of anyone who violates these freqs....the penalty is severe !. This is typical of the current regime though I can't see a new one recinding this as too much money has already gone into the development of the new radios for all the various services. This will also deal with all the illegal radio stations as well, in there minds. This was the position a couple or three years ago when I was last involved in the future of emergency service coms briefings. Things may have change post the new Fire Service acts ...but I doubt it !
You could get one of the new Sony tuners that has DAB and FM - there are others, I thing Denon also have one out. Donut
People are still being issued with new 20 year broadcasting licences for FM frequencies. So no worries about getting a decent FM tuner.
What with Jazz**/experimental/world on R3, Resonance in London, and loads more. It makes TOTAL sense to invest in a tuner, antenna and decent ADC/Recorder IMO. **Did anyone hear that John Zorn tribute to Derek Bailey last Friday night? Wow!
good news, goverment can not what so ever stop independant radio stations to stop transmiting on f.m. analogue.
well that depends .....if its interfereing with military coms it will be off the air so fast it won't know what hit it...... All this was discussed in my presence and the top bod thought it a bit of a wheez .....that they have powers to do that. But as stated previously this was back in 01. But the legislation is already in place, the money has been spent on the new digital gear ...... it won't be long [couple or three years maybe] about the same time scale as for tv transmissions. I had a sweep of the web but found nothing to contradict what I've heard.
I'll eat my hat if FM dissapears in the next decade. Think of all the cars out there with FM radios in them. They'll be driven for another decade at least. Not to mention radio alarm clocks, kitchen portables etc. Demand always creates supply IMO.
