Hehe... no, this is the same one, finally got it fixed.

If you look carefully, you can see the outline of where it sat on the floor for the past year or so.

Congrats. What was the trouble with it?
It must be nice to hear those Kestrels sing again.

It was knackered... it emitted white smoke and blew the fuse. It then repeated this trick after I replaced £20 worth of Sankens.

They've done some other things to it, and it's behaving a little differently now. It had a DC offset issue which has gone, and the volume control is smoother so I figure they've given that a bit of attention. There was one item on the bill of works which was a modification and not charged for, so I guess that's a circuit update that they apply to them as and when they see them.

And yes, play a bit of nitin now and then, among many other things. Wish I had the spare money to buy as much music as I used to...

It's always bad news when the magic white smoke escapes. Glad you got it fixed.

Glad you finally got it working, I know it must've been depressing having it sat there doing nothing :)

What are you using as transport these days, is that your Toshiba DVD player? CD-16 still needs some work?

that's a CD53 (marantz, not creek) sat under the DEQ. The CD16 does need some work, although I have a lead on what might be the issue with it.

The overall system doesn't gazz, but that's because the CD16 is still off duty, and the room isn't as well set up as the room in the flat was and currently it's running on some cheap and nasty speaker cable that I bought as a temporary stand in after the S300 died (the tara labs cable that I had before was part of the reason it happened). However, I am awaiting the arrival of the final few bits for my new-recipe homebrew speaker cable.

It certainly has the strengths I remember... the full, powerful low end (esp compared to the rotel, which with tone controls defeated starts rolling off around 100Hz), the clear but not harsh treble. Whatever mods they've made to it have removed the DC offset issue and it's running cooler, so perhaps there was something odd with it from the start.

Glad you got the S300 back on its feet. If you ever find out what exactly they (meaning Nad UK?) did to it, I'm interested.
    Cheers

Your system did sound good in the flat, I suppose it will take you a few weeks to get the speakers in the correct place.

Sorting speaker cable first... got the left channel on the new cable... pondering whether to give the right channel a shorter run (because fitting 5m of rather inflexible solid-core in that space won't work that well, and it turns out that 500 grams of thick wire isn't actually enough to make all the 5m runs I'd need). And RS screwed my order up so I don't have all the bits I need for all of it...

Speaker cable is done, bye bye IXOS junk.

Took apart the CD16 today and sorted a few things on it, so I THINK it might be fixed. It's worked so far...

Also went around the speaker and amp terminals with a can of alcohol, can of DeOxit and a can of ProGold, and various cotton buds, kitchen towels, etc and gave all of the terminals a good clean (and some of them were really surprisingly mucky).

Overall it looks like the system might be out of the doldrums. Time to get organised for a bakeoff I guess...
