Aside from the specialized damping materials produced only for hi-fis, what could possibly be some cheaper alternatives? I was thinking of the Vileda window cloth as it describes the product to have high content of natural fibres and is highly absorbent of liquid. I wonder if this would absorb heat and vibrations as well

yea you could cover it, not practical tho.
as AT said, the auto damping sheets, tho the ones i have seen have bitchumen in them and i doubt you want that near a source of heat.
Cork tiles is a possibility, or copper sheet - tho that defeats the idea of cheap

Auto Damping materials with flammable properties is indeed dangerous. My Quad 306 is a class A amp that gets hot like an oven. If that's the case with auto materials then out this go from my list.

if you use this stuff to sound proof the engine bay of a car i would have thought it was flame retardent..still not so sure it would work for dampening hi fi though.

Corrections? I thought I read its spec as a class A amp  But it does get hot more than the normal.

I've been trying some foamed butyl rubber, has the same feel as sorbthane, but not quite the same properties. It works well as damping and as a composite in a stiff light shelf or base for CDP.

I used 6mm MDF top and bottom to make a sandwich with the FBR.
    Its a dense foam 70kg/m3 15mm thick

You can get a roll of the stuff from Decathalon

ive spiked some of my units and put them onto mdf panels with feet in an attempt to drain unwanted vibs.im gonna put inner tubes under the mdf in order to stop unwanted groundborn vibs.
could be barking up the wrong tree though.

Interesting article on damping here - even a little bit of theory!

    http://wwwu.earsc.com/engineering/vibration/isolation.phtml

I actually 'obtained' some isodamp rubber sheet to line my CDP. Seems to work very well - as it should! I think it is extraordinarily expensive, but I'll see what I can find out.
