Reading ZG - and not just the Quake thread - is currently not good for the soul. I will stop reading it for a while, I think, and check back later.

I wonder if your page hits show a general decline in interest, or is it just me?

    Kind regards,

    Markus

    Markus,

I was thinking the same thing sir  So does the D & D forum look more appealing?, do I need my wolley jumper and hook norton pint pot?, can I cope with "does my LP12 look good in this?" :(
I feel your advice is of a sound nature Markus, take us deep No.1 and rig for silent running

Curious, I was also thinking the same thing, but I put that down to my non-audiophile nature and the fact that there recently have been no posts that really interested me.

    Hi

Im sure there will be a fuller reply from Michael (head honcho chief chirpa mod)

There were a couple of occasions where I felt like 'moding!' if you like on the thread in question ( I'd bet the others did too), but decided against it. I decided against it early on because..

    1) People need a place to argue indefinately without a set topic
    2) Most of it was good natured.
    3) It never got REALLY nasty for most of its many hundred pages.

On the other hand, it didnt have much to do with hifi at times, and got a little personal here and there.

Its now been stopped, and I think everyone would agree that this was becoming inevitable.

When to moderate is inarguably a hard decision, and I think ZG generally goes for as little moderation as possible.

Do you feel we should have acted/acted earlier? Do you feel that moderation is too low on the forum in general? Or too high?

    Feedback always welcome :)

On the topic of less interesting posts, I can only ask you to help by encouraging new users onto the forum, and using that old grey matter to bring new threads into being when they are lacking ! (We're all guilty of omission on this, me included :) )

    :D

I haven't had much time free to spend on ZG lately so haven't been keeping an eye on things unfortunately. Chris's reply pretty much says it all.

I think in retrospect we should have nipped the off-topic wanderings on the REL Quake thread in the bud or split them off to a different thread in "Chat" as I've done before but I got lazy and then it was too late.

Regarding interesting posts, forums all have their ups and downs. I have to say my interest in HiFi in general has waned considerably in the last few months and I probably wouldn't be posting here hardly at all if I didn't run the place  . Added to that, it's summer, 42degC outside (here in Lisbon) when the only place to be is at the beach  and not sweating infront of a computer screen :) .

    Michael.

I think Zerogain generally has about the right amount of moderation. But the two main protagonists of the Quake thread managed to dominate the forum content for too long a while. Sure, it wasn't a nasty slanging match like some of the "wars" we have seen. The lesson I have learnt is that even reasonably civilized war is still war and puts me off.

Let people argue indefinitely without a set topic. But let the arguments be good-natured. Here, they weren't.

I went away for a short while. There was very few interesting topics to talk about. Then again, my interest in hifi is starting to die, of that I have no doubt. I dont think I will be posting as regularly in the future. Life is just too short for people to be arguing about hifi systems, I think.

    I never went away!

To be fair, I thought everyone was winding everyone else up in a lighthearted manner. Sadly it appears to have been taken in another way by some and for that I am genuinely sorry.

To be honest, my interest in hifi is also waning - there really is only so much you can talk about and I have probably only been hanging around for the jousting.

So, I'm outta here! Good luck in the future and those of you with my email and tel number, make sure you keep in touch.

Merlin, I don't think there is any need for deserting us. Like you, I thought most of the posts that people here are referring to were meant to be lighthearted or windups and until the last few posts where it became clear that people actually took offence I was hoping that thread would just continue (but without the personal insults).

FWIW, I think the level of moderation here is about right. I do sometimes get sick of opinions being forced upon us and by certain individuals forgetting that HiFi is all about personal preferences but on the whole I like it here.

    Thanks to you guys.

I think people expect too much regular news/features for a subject which doesn't lend well to daily events. I have quite a few topics left to discuss, but they have to wait for jobs/houses/life to move on first, before I have any changes planned

Id personally welcome more posts in the 'music' thread.

If any part of zerogain does warrant a new topic every day, this must be it.

one of the things i'm finding is that i tend to roll through subjects. i.e. cd players, transports, dacs, mains, etc... so that if a thread coincides with my current interest i'll read it, if not i'll skim it or miss it. then when my interest in a given subject does crop up i'll either join an existing thread or start a new one on that subject.
that way things tend to be kept fresh as different people have different priorities at different times.
the quake thread did seem to be a bit of a black hole though sucking up all conversation. now it's gone there do seem to be more threads popping up.
    cheers
