Never fancied Diana much – that interview she gave to the BBC was of the utmost bad taste and I found it really despicable (why did I watch it, then: I didn't, really; I was spending the evening with some friends and they wanted to see the thing, so I was forced to acquiesce).

Also, I think she made a lot of excuses to behave like a normal person, whereas she ought to know that becoming Princess of Wales entails obligations and not just glamour.

Then she died because of the publicity she looked for – pretending to run away from all the publicity she kept seeking. And now it seems she was stoned… Her driver was drunk and death sanctified her. A plot to get rid of her? Why should the Queen would have her dead? A martyr is always a fiercer enemy than an empty headed conceited girl.

At the time, I was furious because Mother Teresa of Calcutta – she was a great person, not just a publicity seeking show off – died at more or less the same time and no one took any notice because the fairy tale romantic and pseudo-sexy princess died at the same time.

Had she lived longer I believe the English hearts would have turned away from her: more affairs, possibly drugs and notorious bad influence on her children.

The world seems to be living in a virtual sphere. It is not remotely important that a rebellious princess dies. But the damned tabloids made that more important than everything else.

So I'm sorry to be so negative, but this story really nauseates me.

I exclude all religious fundamentalists from greatness.

'publicity seeking' and 'show off' fit remarkably well.

I've wondered this too - why should the Queen, or any other party for that matter, want her dead? I wonder if anyone with more knowledge of such things could explain the possible ramifications of - had Diana been pregnant with Dodi's child, and kept it - a step-royal being born?

Would this have had any impact on the line for inheritance of the throne, and, if so, in what way? Also, would it have automatically given the Al Fayed's British citizenship - again, I wonder, what impact would this have had? What could an individual do with great wealth as a British citizen that they cannot when they are not?

Genuine questions, by the way, so if anyone can shed any light I'd be grateful.

Based on that link, Auric, it seems that the 'Like Father, Like Son' saying is as true for the daughters, too....

I don't get it. You ask "why not?" then then admit it's selfish and stupid!

Your number may be up, but what about the person who you crash into and kill? A dude on his way to work? Kids crossing the road? An entire family? Perhaps even some of the other people from the party who weren't so "stupid" and made sure they'd have an alternative way home after.

I've done it MOself before in the past, (been in car with someone else driving who perhaps shouldn't have been), I'd not do it again.

    Goomer,
I think that "Freedom from many of life's daily vexing challenges" or "The Devil makes work for idle hands" are good descriptions of a life style that will continue to play a big part in culling the ranks of rich and idle for many more years to come. Did we expect more from someone who was famous for who she married and for living rather well off of the Civil List ? yes we did but she is what we got.

She was famous for being famous and so was Jade Goodey for a month or so.

TonyL - yes, the evidence for Henri Paul being pissed is none too convincing and he certainly didn't look it. The documentary I was refering to was about JFK - not Diana ;)

There are many things that don't quite add up about the Diana crash though:

    - apparently they were returning to Dodi's house but that route was going away from his house.
    - as above, Henri Paul didn't look in the least bit drunk in the video of him shortly before getting in the car and his blood test allegedly had high levels of carbon monoxide
    - after the crash they were looking for a white Fiat Punto which had left traces of it's paint on the Merc. Depsite looking at thousands of white Puntos they never found it.
    - however, one photographer who didn't have an alibi for the crash time, drove a white Fiat Punto and his burnt body was later found in (clearly) suspicious circumstances - a witness murdered?
    - why did it take 70 minutes to get Diana to hospital and why did they pass 2 hospitals on the way that were closer?
    - why are the details of the autopsy being kept secret?

Still, I don't see a motive good enough for the Royal Family or anyone to want to have her bumped off. If she was doing coke so what? Why would they cover that up? Same goes for carrying Dodi's child.

We're not being told everything which unfortunately keeps the conspiracists going but without a motive I just don't see it.

    Michael.

It is easy to forget both how incredibly moronic much of the British press is and also how right wing and blinkered most people who support the royal family are. If a whole nation grinds to a halt as a result of her death with flower toting idiots crying in the streets what reaction would these people have to the prospect that she was “a drug addictâ€Â. Remember these are the very people who want to bring back hanging and lock up all criminals / drug addicts for ever etc.

The royal family is also incredibly powerful from a legal perspective. Lets say, purely hypothetically of course, a person were suspected of protecting an alleged male rapist in their employ, and then being allegedly caught in bed with same. Were information of this kind remotely applicable to a royal it would probably get anyone who directly alleged it into a lot of trouble…

This is a very interesting conspiracy theory, though I suspect it is a red herring. IIRC a broken light from a Fiat Punto was found at the scene, though I was unaware that any evidence from the Fiat was found on the Merc.

I am convinced this is to protect the English middle classes from the unbearable news that their beloved princess was a coke head. As far as I'm aware they have “lost†or contaminated any available blood samples and very quickly embalmed her body which would prevent any drug testing being done were the body to be exhumed.

I simply don't understand the carbon monoxide bit, though being alert and agile, and then driving way too fast is totally consistent with cocaine abuse.

No, Mother Theresa's activities are a matter of record.

And she was an extremely conservative Catholic, also not a surprise.

It's interesting to consider the pair, Diana and Theresa. I take the view that Diana was more benign, but there are interesting parallels between them. I think they met quite a number of times.

Maybe she knew something about the rest of the royals? Perhaps she was willing to make it public if her relationship with Dodi wasn't allowed to run the path she wanted it to?

Ah yeah, but I can't drive. When I ride a bike I won't do it on ONE pint let alone anything else. As I say, I don't advocate ANYONE driving under the influence of anything other than caffiene but if it's pissing down and a taxi's £30 or more and the other person's driving, they'll be on the road and not sober whether you're in the car with them or not, so you might as well accept the lift and take the risk. Stupid yes, but I've only done this 3 times in my life....

Do you think, as with Diana/embalming, they might have "doctored" the driver's blood somehow in an attempt to cover something up???

You're right on the coke thing btw - it's not fun bumping into someone who's had more than 3 or 4 lines - they tend to be a total asshole - really really not pleasant...

This is one of the most interesting aspect of the case, I am very curious as to how they will explain or disprove it. This was claimed on one TV documentary to be a near fatal dose, yet now explanation as to how someone could get such a dose was offered. I have very little medical knowledge, so don't know where one would go to get a carbon monoxide overdose, though I believe it makes a person drowsy and uncoordinated. This does not seem to be the case with Paul prior to his getting into the car judging by the security video footage.

My gut feeling is still very much that the occupants of the car were all seriously coked-up and Henri Paul drove recklessly and crashed as a result. I suspect everything else is a cover-up to protect the sanity of thousands of Daily Hatemail readers – I can see it now: 'Diana, peoples princess, Diana good' vs. 'Diana drug addict, Diana bad' at which point their head explodes in the style of David Cronenberg's Scanners…

He he he - I wander what my dad'd make of that? He reads the Hatemail all the time (perhaps that's why I occasionally bleated on about the single mums thing etc (which I'm trying to stop worrying about this year - thankfully!)). I don't want to think what kind of mess his head's innards'd make being splattered over the wall a'la Mr Bean's paint :) I suspect he probably already reckons that they were all drugged up though... MIght have to ask him about this next time i phone him.

Unless Paul had just taken a demonically huge hit on a 3 litre "f***bucket" or something similar just prior to the crash, I would have thought there was no way he could have had that much carbon monoxide in his bloodstream. Unless of course, the exhaust pipe leaked into the inside of the car???

I lived round the corner from the scene of the accident for a few years as it happens. That a piece of Fiat Punto was found in the vicinity does not come as a surprise. I don't think I've ever seen a Parisien motor that wasn't dented and/or had some parts of it's bodywork missing. The tunnels on the voie Pompidou are frequently the scenes of minor accidents and bumps.
