Right - the vinyl guys have got turntables, motors, PSUs, plinths, platters, arms, carts and phono stages to play with and digital boys like me generally just have...erm....a CD player :(

I think it's time that people who are serious about digital replay get serious about their kit :D Just as no self-respecting vinyl junkie would go and buy a "ready made" TT IMO to get the best out of digital involves choosing (at a minimum) a transport, DAC and digital IC. Advanced tweakers may then also consider upsamplers and/or jitter busters to go in there.

Of course the fact that I have a separate transport, upsampler and DAC has nothing to do with promoting this way of doing things :D

Seriously though, I think that if you're prepared to put the effort in the rewards of going the digital "separates" route will always be better than the ready made single box.

At the very least it gives you at least some of the tweaking options that vinilistas have

Yes, for optium sound I feel seperates are the way to go, says he with a one box :D
Mike don't forget all those extra power cables, trick digital leads, and extra isolation for the dac,
Now, I have going spare, 3 dacs ,2 upsamplers, a cd player and sinks and cables, anyone for tennis  Wm

If nothing else, the DAC can be used for more than one digital source (CD, DVD, PC, DAB, MD, etc), and just like a preamp, any upgrade will benefit multiple sources.

Of course, just like TT, support is a tweakable element for the CD player.

If you subscribe to the extreme school of tweaking, there's no end of things you can do... LED baths, light absorbtion, chassis damping, power mods, clocks, etc, etc, etc, etc

This is sooo true. There is an art to extracting the most from Digital replay but many digitalians are too idle to explore.

Shame on you!! Go for it I say.

    And then there's:

StatMat, green pen, CD edge sanding, freezing the CD's, wrapping the CD's in aluminium foil, lots of feet (titanium, ceramic, aluminium, sorbothane, oak, composite), building your own off-board PSU, Shakti Stones, pressing pause before playing each track...

Who says digitalians have it easy;)
