I meant with the proof reading, yes my mum will help me, of course she dosn't understand anything thats in the disertation but she does understand english.

Its perfectly acceptable for people to proof read reports.

Ah, but foreigners have the advantage of being taught English properly, unlike, at least in recent years, people in the UK. My own knowledge of correct English grammar is woeful as a result of our wonderful education system (and of course my laziness to learn for myself subsequently).

ps Now that I think about it, I suspect for instance that strictly my reply beginning "Ah, but..." will offend some who know better.

Thats the irony of our stupid sustem, maths and english are so basic its asumsed you know it once you get secondary level. They jump into too advanced topics to quickly meaning that the basics are never properly covered.

it's not even a modern thing i was in the 2nd stream in maths but due to a stellar mock o-level result got bumped to the first stream who were on a completely different subject which was based on stuff i hadn't yet covered. this made me just give up on maths and even though i got a reasonable o'level result in the subject i'm pissed as it's the one subject i really use every day. as it stands i had to teach myself a lot of the math i use nowadays and so don;t share the common 'language' with other 'math heads' this can let me down especially as i find myself re-inventing the wheel when i could just look up the solution if i knew how to 'read the language'.
    cheers

I beg to differ. Some "foreigners", as you say, may be taught English properly. Which is probably true of most northern Europe countries. Not where I live, where most my fellow countrymen have yet to realize that English is THE only international language, and try and teach it, learn it, read it and pronounce it (if at all achievable) properly.

Worse still, our own language, in both its written and spoken forms is going down the drain and SMS-style spelling is everywhere. Even major daily papers can't spell properly anymore.

Latin and Greek are so-called dead languages. Who's next?

Micheal will hate me for this but when I went to Paris I found very few people could speak English, compared to Lille where English seemed to be almost the main language. Everybody also seems to speak perfect english in Amsterdam.

In spain both Lloret and Barcelona I found english to be patchy, but I got by. I felt a bit emberassed when some french people helped me out of a stuck lift in Lloret Del Mar and I didn't know how to thank them properly. I started thanking them in english but they had no idea what I was saying. I just said Merci in the end.

I also must be about the only person ever to get out of studying foreign languages on medical grounds.

You actually spelt (spelled) "Merci" right.

It was on my part just another pitiful attempt at a pun.

    Sorry
