A gasman is coming tomorrow to disconnect the gas fire and check the other pipes are safe going to the boiler etc. However this will be £40. I guess its ok if thats all that needs to be done.

I should have become a Corgi registered plumber, then I too could have been rich;)

You won't get much better around Manchester unless you know someone. I've got a tame gasfitter who was one of my dad's mates. He charged me £30 to remove a pipe that was in the way of where the woodburners going to go. Does sound like a fair price.
I've got a mate in London who has just given up his job in the city to train as a plumber he reckons the money will be better. £80 an hour should be possible so he says.

I think the thing with plumbing though is you have to be good with your hands and you have to like doing the job. Otherwise the money will not be enough. So many apprecentships don't fisnish them for this reason as they realise its harder than it first seems.

I can change taps make simple copper joints using couplers etc, but soldering pipes, fitting boilers etc is way beyound my skills could ever reach. I think I will stick to C++ and Java.

I guess its ok if it the total job comes to £40.

We had a qoute from the local reputuable builders (they are well known to do a good job) for a UPVC window (its big one) with double glazing for £530 that also included plastering etc as the innerframe is apart of the existing window so there would be bare bricks.

I am also getting another qoute tomorrow off the person who fitted the same window next door.

not realy, most aprentices get fed up of earning crap money for 3-5 years whilst all there mates are earning a fortune in no skill dead end jobs, often theres no gaurentee of a job at the end of your apprenticeship either so the temptaion to give it all up and enjoy life is very tempting espcially at 18

Ah yeah - but just by going "tssssch" you earn about 40000 billion quid...

My mate is a plumber and he earns a shedload - far more than most of my mates and me who do computer based jobs such as web design... Mind you, he's also none too bright, but he's a good laugh.

I just wish that whenever he comes round my gaff he wouldn't eye up the boiler and whinge about the lack of pressure etc. I DON'T CARE! The place is rented - so hands off!!! ;)

    Tee hee...

He sounds like a an ex joiner mate of mine, he used to moan that just about everything in our house was fitted wrong yet some of the work he has done wasn't perfect.

I told him to get lost once when he critised a ceiling my none builder grandad had put up when he was in his late 60's.

Yeah - I mean these people who can't switch off from work do my head in - that's why I REFUSE to talk about the weather - can't even do that without talking shop!!!

That sunset on Wednesday was gorgeous though!

yeah, that reminds me of when I was working at the Sunbury BP site - I'd get a taxi to and from the hotel, once I'd ask them for a receipt they'd say "right, that will be 8 quid then..." cheeky c*nts!
    8 quid for a 5 minute journey
