look at the obscene and gaudy displays of christmas lights that people drape all over their semi's at this time of year and wonder.... 'how many iraqi children or english / american troops have died to provide the power for that fcuking display'?

    just me then...
    cheers

Not really, but I was a little put off by my local pub's three giant inflatable Santas on the roof. That's all wrong - there's only one Santa.

Yes, i go through an estate everyday to and from work.
One of those estates where benefits rule, the family shares the shell suit and it seems ok to fight your wife/children/police on the pavement. Where everyone drinks redstripe and smokes like a chimney. Yet at christmas they have more decoration than blackpool and nearly overload the national grid in the evening.
The best one (most tasteless??) has an inflatable santa complete with sleigh and riendeer in the garden, another santa on the roof and a plywood christmas tree covering the front windows (top and bottom) the tree is decorated in lovely househol 100watt bulbs.

No fire risk there then  . Mind you my parents use candles (real ones with flames) on their tree :MILD: - it's a German tradition (my mum's German). Actually, I think it looks a lot nicer than any naff lights but you have to be careful where you put the candle holders and keep an eye on the tree when the candles are lit.

Even better is that it is outside the house!

No, I just wonder why at this time of the year are some people so willing to exhibit to the world their lack of taste, have they never been educated by the "changing room" style of daytime TV?

Julian - to make matters worse, one of the local electrickery companies offers a subsidy to encourage these gross displays. My neighbours appear to have taken full advantage of this with a truely appauling display that casts an unnatural glow across the court of an evening.

Are you sure the candles are free of ozone depleting substances? :D

Don't know - they're made from genuine organic bees wax though :)

Beware though, check the origin of the candles, we get all kinds of honey, mushrooms and even foie gras from the ex eastern block countries. Too close to Chernobyl for comfort ;)

One of our neighbours has just put up white icicle effect lights round his guttering and it actually looks quite good. There are one or two flashing bushes nearby as well but I haven't seen any other the vulgar displays so beloved of housing estates down south.

Except it seems that Santa must be seen climbing up at least one house per street.

Good point about switching the lights off late at night Julian (timer switches seem a good plan to me), but I will admit I like the increase in Christmas lighting in recent years. Really helps get me in the Christmas mood :) There are obviously various crimes against taste that could do with some serious censorship, but by and large a nice thing.

Seen plenty myself  Biggest fashion victim has to be the blow-up snowman in the front garden that's the same size as the house

Luckily none of these are on my part of the estate.

I've also noticed an increase in the blue 'chav' LEDs - people are now using them to light up their garages...errr.....why?

100 watt household lightbulbs, outside?! And they're not dead yet? There is a God, and he is watching over the chavs by the sound of it!

Perhaps a gallery of the worst exhibits could be set up somewhere....I've passed some truly amazing exhibits on the way home this year, and they do seem to be getting bigger.

    Happy Xmas all.
