I received this letter in the post:

    Several things of note:

    1) This is not the company with which my domain is registered
    2) My domain is not due to expire for another year
    3) The prices for registration are several times the going rate (which is around £10/year for a .com)

If you receive a letter like this (for those with registered domains), make sure you know what you are doing! I have passed a copy of this letter on to trading standards.

What they have done is perfectly legal is not crafty. However they have spoilt it with this
"suspension and deletion from us" they have got nothing to with the nominet and domain names they are a third party domain registration service however some people may fall for it.

It is very miss leading and trading standards should investigate. As you know you can reregister with anytbody and it costs much less than what they are charging.

I paid £6 inc VAT for my .co.uk for two years.

This is very common in my business - I am constantly receiving letters offering to put our patents and trade marks on special registries or to renew them or something - all for a suitably inflated fee of course. Many of them are done up to look very official (I can think of one that incorporates the EU flag and is rendered in a multiplicity of languages). Mine go to my assistants (to warn them of the existence of such things) and then straight in the waste paper basket. However, I imagine that many folk, confronted with an official-looking letter, would automatically pay up.

I have been getting scams like this for many years. Trading Standards do not act unless they get many complaints. I was told that they have very few staff to deal with the amount of complaints every day.
So they give advice on the phone but do not act.

They try to concentrate on cases that involve very large sums of money.

Except that 34sp will renew it before you can.
