I'm soooo bored by that type of game now. Just wandering around blasting everything that moves following the thinnest of "plots" doesn't really grab me. Also, I really don't see how anyone can be frightened by a computer game, especially one with so little relation to reality as Doom3.

Oh I dunno, it is pretty scary and atmospheric IMO, get some headphones on, turn them up, put the lights off, and enjoy. I dont suppose I'll ever get bored with that type of game... I wouldnt say I was frightened, but it puts you on edge :)

btw Michael, have you played Far Cry? You might like that one ;)

I'm getting through Splinter Cell "Pandora Tomorrow" atm. I've got a sort of rule that I won't buy a new game until I've finished the one I'm on otherwise it just gets silly and I don't have that much time to play anyway. Far Cry looks quite interesting though, haven't played it yet.

I enojyed Doom and Doom 2 but even with Doom 2 I didn't finish it as it just got ridiculously difficult. When it becomes that difficult I just lose any interest (a common failing with many games IMO). Co-operative network play was the best thing about Doom. We used to play it in the office with headsets and mics so we (usually only 2 of us) could talk to each other whilst we planned how to take out the bad guys. It was the closest I've got to a "virtual reality" experience.

I definitely agree with some games being too hard. I guess the proper hardcore gamers will call me a lamer or whatever, but some games are just FAR too hard. And judging by Doom 3, I can tell this will probably get *really* hard later on, as when it kicks off, it seems fairly hard from the outset.

Perhaps I should just start playing these games in "easy".

You might find Planetside a bit more fun to play.

I must admit I'm not that bothered about Doom 3, though I'll admit that the engine shows quite a bit of potential. It should be interesting to see what the mod community/third party developers can do with it.

Bottleneck, have you seen Chronicles of Riddick on the Xbox yet? some fairly nice visual tricks and not a bad game either (even if it is rather short). But I must admit I'm looking forward to Halo 2, even though it might suffer from the hype.

Ah yes, good old 'network bandwidth testing'. Intensive 'network bandwidth testing' was a key responsibility in every IT department I worked in. Quake II was an especially useful bandwidth testing tool too.

Bought Doom 3 midmorning today, am just settling down for a bit of a blast now :D

Edit: and BTW my pretty-good-for-two-years-ago PC (Athlon 2100+, Geforce4 Ti4200, 512MB PC333) runs it surprisingly well - think I'll still stick in a new graphics card sometime in the next six months though.

Hmmm, this all sounds like an excellent excuse to get a new graphics card and some water cooling for the CPU....

What res/detail level you running it at? I can only get acceptable (IMO) performance out of 800x600 medium detail, my machine is 2600+ Ti4200 512Mb PC333?

trying to keep an ageing PC up to speed is what converted me to games consoles.

you cant beat the range/price of games on PC though.

Because of Doom 3 I'm thinkng about doing a PC upgrade, mine's woefully in need of it, PIII 600, 192mb RAM, 64MB graphics... nowhere even near the minimum req. for Doom 3 :( I'm sure the Xbox version will be pretty superb, just not sure I want to wait however long until it actually comes out. 10 years of waiting for the next game and I can't run it, not amused. New motherboard, RAM, gfx card and processor req.

Apart from Ebuyer, anyone recommend any good sites for PC components?

I had an email off PC World a little while back. They were selling it with a graphics card for £100 all in. No idea if the card was any good, but would assume it'd be of a good enough standard to play the game if they're coupling it with it.

Not sure if my PIII 450/192MB/No idea graphics card would cope!

Apparantly the sound (5.1) on Doom 3 is meant to be a bit speacial.

Last game I played "propery" on my pc was Half Life!!!

ilyocker, you can check out the release dates of new x-box games on www.amazon.co.uk

Aswell as doom III, xbox gives you half life II presently, and of course Halo 1 and soon Halo II. I could be wrong but I dont believe Halo I or II are released on other platforms. Halo 1 was just revolutionary.

If you have broadband Xbox live works very well, and if you dont have a DVD player it makes a respectable stab at that too.

    Hard sell over!
    :)

Bottleneck, the original Halo is also available for the PC and Mac, though I believe the best version is still the Xbox one :). If anyone is interested, a good site for checking out the best online prices for games is www.gamestracker.co.uk, they also list pre-order/release dates.
