    Yep....

The latest idea put forward is that I might train to become a driving instructor.

Any one any experience here.....or know any one who has done it?

    eg Pros, cons etc?

I m sure the money is not half as good as the ads make it out to be.......but then I hardly make too much now!

One reservation I have is of being couped up in the front of a Corsa all day. Its bad enough when I take a trip with my parents in their Forester anywhere.

    TIA

could be interesting - but i guess you have to pay for training..? then maybe work for yourself..?
if so, then you'd need to build up a customer base which may take time...

have you contacted the big boys like bsm, aa etc..? I dare say once you build up experience etc you could then become a driving examiner...

    good luck tho!

I always notice what those TV ads don't say. 'now I'm earning £30,000'. Doesn't say 'per annum' - £30k per 3 years isn't quite the same... and there is no mention made of whether that is straightforward wages or if there is all the car running costs to come out of that. Be very careful!

    yeah, some simple calcutations...

15 per hour say - but you wouldn't be working an 8 hour days paid (unless you worked longer) - as you'd need to travel between trainees...15 quid an hour for 8 hours a day works out at just over 31k befor tax etc - then there's running costs which maybe you can claim back if you're working for yourself..?
I guess there must be some kind of 'model' to outline the costs tho....

but on the upside - you do work for yourself and you can decide when to work...I know of a few guys who compliment this with their full time work - don't know the fulls ins and outs tho...

what about being a taxi driver..?

I'd just be sure of the economics first, where you live , demand, competition etc.
Personally I 'd rather be a gettaway driver-the hours are good as are the wages:)

my mums step dadhad a mk1 or 2 when he first (semi) retired, back in the early 70s.

My brother remebers; i just have a very jazy recollectio of it. "uncle " less's cars never lasted long (especially during the oil crisis of the period ....+presumably 15-20/gallon max).

An Austin 1300 VDP thingy came next :D

David, If you are serious about driver training I can pass you details of my best mate, Driving instructor for many years, ran
his own business qualified up to police advanced standard.
Packed it in as he got fed up of the earning ceiling, only so many hours in the day etc. but may be worth a chat.
    Let me know. regards

I think that could be very helpful if it could be arranged?

    Thankyou.

Sounds a bit crap to me, to be honest. £15-20 an hour, running costs to take out, advertising to take out, repair and maintenance etc... Then you have to be honest about whether you can even fill a full day, 5 days a week? Highly unlikely for quite some time after starting up, until you build a good rep. Will you be able to build a good rep, are you actually any good at teaching?

Not meaning to be negative, just realistic. Joining BSM or AA might be the better option?
