Do you have to pay import duty on cd's from the USA?
I have never paid import duty on the CDs I get from the USA (with the current dollar rate the only place to buy) but I believe if the item imported is over a set value duty has to be paid. I'm sure someone will know what the amount is but I thinks it's around £18, but your discs will come as individual item so that should not be a problem unless you start to get a very large number then the customs and excise will probable find you.
yeah, I think it's something like 40 us dollars - which normally works out at about 18 quid...it's a real pain as from what I recall, you pay the import duty and also an admin charge from royal mail...
I know of people who have paid duty when buying quite a few CDs at once. Also I know someone that used to get loads of DVDs from america and they eventialy got to him even though he was only getting one at a time.
I have used several in the past, but now use Amazon new and used a lot, which means I'm getting stuff from all over the USA and Canada. A friend I know imports lots of stuff from the USA (pottery / bike parts) and he says the custom and excise import duty bill can come months after the goods have arrived
If you don't mind to buy new cd's then seek out CD Connection. They carry a huge catalogue of fairly priced albums (couldn't find it any cheaper elsewhere) and charge USD 5.84 for two (single) cd's which is favourable compared to other stores. (In Holland such order doesn't result in levying of customs duties or VAT, although the total amount usually exceeds the EUR 22 hurdle that we should take into account). Ordered dozens of cd's from them last year without any problem whatsoever.
