I had a look at this today. Is it me or are ebay sellers getting very greedy with new product sales? I found ebay very uncompetitive when buying an LCD television.
I am now looking for a digital SLR and the offerings on ebay, for example for a Canon EOS 400D, are much more expensive than can be found on other websites such as pricerunner etc.

let's face it ,more and more people are buying from such sites like ebay, even dealers from the high street are selling on ebay, maybe it's the thrill of bidding , instead of going to christie's, what do you think? nando.

to answer the above questions - bidding is quite addictive in some ways (and will affect different people in different ways) - but when someone bids on something they seem determined to win it - and sometime no matter the cost!!

when i was down in london the other month - I was walking down a high street (in some surburb near peckham!) and just about all of the shops were take aways and restaurants!!

Well for what it's worth, the UK seems to be in love the ebay.co.uk. I started my business on ebay, and in short ebay express is a "Buy It Now" only site with business sellers only on it, and you also have to had a good track record with ebay so I believe it's a attempt from ebay.co.uk to give there customers some peace of mind, and perhaps clean up there act a bit!

I've recently closed my own website, simply it's something I tried to make work,I put money into, advertising etc, and still my sales were very poor compared to my ebay sales and thats after 3 Years of effort.

It's been quite a strange turnaround for record labels and distributors "Yes... I sell CD's", 3 years ago they didn't want to know about ebay, and saw it as a negative to there business, now they have had to do a 360 degree turn around, as a lot of there sales are now coming from ebay.

Richard Dunn is quite correct, the amount of shops on the high streets will slowly get smaller and smaller, of couse they won't all close, but you can't help feel thats the way it's going. You only have to look at Tesco's home delivery set up, this is becoming more and more popular, and I will be using this christmas, damned if i'm going to wait for hours in a checkout for just fresh veg !

My town is already dominated by pubs, takeaways, estate agents and Charity shops; Virtually everything else has gone out of town.:(

Who is going to compete with ebay though. No one is in the same ball park and monopolys like this are always self destructive in the long run.

I suppose anyone who invents the next version will be bought out by them like google just bought you tube. How about real time auctions with simultanious bidding, no bid for 10secs the hammer goes down, exciting :D

Talking about you tube, we get pictures how about a you tube vid of any of you presenting your system with comment and a little blast at the end, could be interesting ;)

The concept is pretty sound, I was sent a pack from eBay because I sold quite a lot of stuff one month and now they love me!

Only eBay businesses and powersellers can use the express and it has to be buy it now prices so no bidding on this site.

I still find eBay the best for price but have recently had a bad experience with a NAS I Purchased which I wanted my money back for.

Never the less its usually the first place I look. What I would prefer is all buy it now be on Express leaving the genuine auctions on eBay.

hi guys, i have been on ebay now well over two years, sold a lot of stuff but never current range as to not to annoy manufactures or other dealers, i find the site very ammusing in the sense that one day a favourite item fetches more than what is worth, and others that are worth more fetch less! but is a living for all that can get a bargain and make a profitt. i do agree in a way that there are some very dodgeis on that site, and one has to be aware. is a risk i know but they do offer a very good security,, there is one thing i do not understand is that there is someone selling a perticular item descrived as sealed brand new in a box, they want to see a picture of the item ! if open for that reason then that would defie the obgect of "sealed box new" beg to differ.nando

Well, I think the point about shops disappearing is a sad and important one.

As Richard Dunn mentioned, if eBay gets too popular, too big for its own shoes, it will not be allowed to continue to dominate and others will come up with alternatives... but the web will undoubtedly be the virtual shopping centre of the future... if nothing else, it can conjure up in one place things from all parts of the world, allowing access to items that otherwise we wouldn't even know about... That is not (necessarily) a bad thing in my book...

However, eBay alone can't take the whole of the responsibility for what is happening to our high streets. Here in London, for example, shop surface prices are ridiculously high, and no doubt they will be high elsewhere... add to that the "wonderful" congestion charges pulling people away from the town centres and soon we will have deserted centres of towns... we will have britain looking like the US, where city centres are just for high rising banks, cinemas and restaurants (few) and everyone lives in glorified suburbias, full of grid-like streets and look-alike houses...
    (sigh)

If you ask me, I think it is a shame that shops are disappearing. I enjoy browsing for LPs, CDs, DVDs much better in a shop than on eBay. I like the human contact, the diversity, the things you find that you were not looking for... the not having to spend all the time sitting at home... but I hate the looking for a parking space or the crowded, always late bus or tube train... the queueing and sometimes the arrogance of certain sales people...

I think we will see a change in the way people sell in the high streets, not just what they sell. We will perhaps see the ones that succeed providing more than just products... providing an experience that will be what you look for... going to cinemas is less and less an experience these days, with home theatre in many cases beating the run-of-the-mill theatre screen... but people will still want to go out, and experience something different... so I think there is a real need for that... whatever ticks your fancy.

I hope shops don't die. I hope they learn to survive, reinvent what they need to reinvent in order to be an important part of peoples lives, as they have been. I for one would not like to lose them!

    Sorry about my ramblings... :)
    Jack
