I bought her last album - mainly cos it was on sacd and I'd just bought a player.

Some of the songs are very good and the album does sound excellent but not my cup of tea really - not surprised the hifi fraternity have picked up on her. Reminds of Patricia Barber - good sounding albums but music a bit boring. She could do with have a couple of more uptempo songs.

Speaking of hifi though, she mentions a fair few hifi journos on her thanks list.

Had a listen to her stuff in Virgin the other day. Not bad, but some of it can be a bit dull. Yola!, her previous album, is better than the latest IMO.

The latest album, After Hours, can be described as musical wallpaper. Inoffensive and you don't really notice it.

Yola is a much better album. Some good songs on there.

The original Eleanor McEvoy album is more like After Hours. Knowing what I know now, I'd only buy Yola.

The reason there's an audience in the hifi community is the rather sad reason that the recording quality of the SACD albums (Yola and After Hours) is very good indeed. They're recorded directly on DSD, mastered in DSD and stored on the SACD as DSD of course. The PCM layer is created at the last stage with sony's SuperBitMapping process (something they brought out long ago with DAT, I don't know the details of it), and does sound very good.

Musically, she's in the same sort of vein as Norah Jones, Katie Melua and so on.

sounds like she's best avoided then, I suppose I knew that. I'd wondered where the hifi fixation came from.
