    HI Folks',
interesting one here...I bought an electric fire last Thursday for my home cinema room, now, the only place I could plug it into was in my 4 way socket (which also holds amp, dvd and cd player...).

I was watching bit of Moulin Rouge - and the sound was so much warmer! I don't know if it was the weed, but wow, it sounded much better than pre-fire...
I also rented 'pay it forward' (average film, but had potenial!) - that sounded great too!
CDs were great too - tho, I wasn't playing them very loud, just background music...

but surely this goes against the grain..?

    any comments welcome...

    I'll have another listen tonight...:MILD:

What about Coal or Gas :MILD: !!!!

However, something like an electric fire should be sucking tonnes of current from your wall  and away from your equipment.

I used to get a notable drop in output when the oven was on , I couldn't even turn on both power amps at the same time or the master fuse would trip :D. Hilarious.

funny you should mention a coal fire - we live in a big old house, in the main room, we've a hunter stove (very nice and warm), but I refused to use the coal fire in the home cinema room...too much black dust!! mind, that took ages to convince my girlfriend tho...:)

Maybe it's a psychological thang - fire warms you up, so the sound seems warmer... Sounds crazy but I get that sometimes. When the weather's grey and freezing my hifi sometimes seems "cold", and vice-versa when it's nice 'n toasty with warm lighting. Seriously! Really, I'm not insane! Muhahahahaaaa!

Technically, i suppose the temperature, humidity and any prevailing winds etc would have an effect on the sound waves.

I suspect ones nipples would suffer more in a cold room than the music though.

I find being stoned normally makes me MORE critical of a system these days - unless with mates :)

That fire though - gives a whole new meaning to the term "cable toaster" :D :D :D

OK, how about trying a portable freezer! See if this makes the sound a little cooler. If the fire was making it too warm, perhaps trying various aMOunts of fire/cooler combo's to get the right balance for you. Did you fit a power chord upgrade?

simple realy an electric fire contains sevral coils of wire, these have a specific inductance which will change as it heats up.as the coils are in parrallel with the load they form quite a complex electrical network or filter, the warmer the fire the greater the change in the filters, you could try a convector heater for a slightly diffrent sound but some people complain of a "windy" sound when these are used:MILD:

    thanks for that Therma! interesting...

I've no mains treatment MO...I'm saving up for a cheapish stereo amp just now tho...thinking of the NAD 320cbee, rotel ra01, or the marantz 7200...think I'll plump for the nad tho...

I meant as in Mains Cables on the heater! ;)

All three of the amps you mention there are well regarded (as i'm sure you're aware), and should be a good improvement. The marantz in partucular sounds interesting, but then it is the MOst expensive of what you mention. How do you feel about second hand? It could well be out of line with the whole system synergy theories, but with an apparent budget of around £200-£300 you may be best looking s/h. Alot seems to be being said regarding amplifier technology progress. Perhaps one of the best items to buy s/h!

the fire already came with a hefty cable anyway... :D

I have an oil filled electric radiator which i've been using over the past week or 2 as the nights get colder. i've found the sound of my system is much smoother and the music just glides along with liquid mids and highs....
    cheers

Personally, I find the bottom end gains some inner warmth after a good curry.
