And don't forget anything by Pan Sonic (I've not seen them mentioned much on here). The 4CD set 'Kesto' is fabulous, as well as classic albums 'vakio' and 'A'. For anybody already interested in Pan Sonic, also check out Mika Vainio's solo stuff on the Sahko label, especially the album 'Metri'.

If it's any interest you could get onto Soulseek and browse my shared files, I have enought there to keep you going for the the next year or so at least, and I still have 1000's to rip.

As many will testify, alot of the great electronic music of the past was pressed on vinyl only and it's only through old DJ/collectors like myself that you can find it. Having access to backup files in mp3 is good because you can offer people the chance to see what they like, then they can go off and buy the genuine product without worrying they will not like it.

PM me if you want to know my Soulseek user name.

I have over 100Gb shared up and access to over a Tera byte of music ;)

Soulseek can be downloaded here: http://www.slsknet.org/slsk157test8.exe

I'm not into the whole mp3 thing. I tend to buy cd's on recomendation. If 70% are keepers I'm happy. Also I love to check out the artwork on the real packaging. Besides if I spent days sitting at my laptop it would drive me mad. Something for the winter maybe.

I am into the whole original article and packaging too but as I said, alot of the material released over the years has only been on vinyl and I see no logic in ripping a ton of CD's for the car. Plus some of the original CD's are so valuable now I would rather keep them nicely stored.

For in-car and iPod/Walkman type players mp3's are fine, I use the time when I am in my car etc. to either revisit old material or listen to new downloads. My iPod in-car installation has proved a superb method of carryng a ton of music on the go.

I hate mp3 for it's sound quality on a proper system but like I said, in the right domain it's fine.

Plus, the circle of enthusiasts I keep company with maintain the highest rip quality and can rip in any audio format required. I also have a friend in Paris that runs his own record label and I have been working with him in releasing older hard-to-find classics. This has only been on vinyl to date but the quality usually far surpasses the original pressings. Maybe once he's got a good back catalogue together I will suggest he does compilation CD for you ;)

...Skylax Records is his label by the way.

I second Pan Sonic and would follow it up with Loscil.

Here's some with a bias to "electronic" i.e. experimental as opposed to electronica almost as a type of dance, also including some drum and bass. I'd use www.gnoosic.com or www.allmusic.com to check whether any of these lie close to anything you know and like:

If you can find it (this is ripped in my Soulseek files ;) ), Farben Starbox on Klang Elektronic,...SUPERB! I have a few releases on this label, the older stuff is great, but the later Alter Ego stuff all got a bit too commercial for me.

Holy cow, another long list. I will ignore it until next month.

A mate of mine is into the mp3 thing, with a computer running into the hifi. The concept is interesting, aside from the time and effort required, sound quality and reliance on effing windows not crashing! I use computers out of necessity of work, but try to seperate them from home entertainment if I can. It's great you are putting something back into the music world though, so well done.

I can recommend the new(ish) Richard Chartier "Tracing", if you have any money left.

Would be good to have specific albulm's of note too, rather than just the band's name. From experience some range from great to poor of the same

I'd add Bonobo and Cinematic Orchestra. Second the Fourtet suggestion and Nightmares On Wax is essential.

Have you heard the new Nightmares one yet? Bought it on the spur as I hadn't liked much of his since smokers... aside from the odd tune but this one is really great. Good cover too.

    Popol Vuh

One of my most played in the past has been:
Tantric Songs Hosianna Mantra on the celestial harmonies label. Sadly Florian Fricke died a few years back so we'll have no new stuff. I only wish I'd stocked up on all the vinyl reissues I spotted in Probe records Liverpool a few years ago.

If you like the Popol Vuh sound you should try to track down a copy of Sundancer by Stephen Russell - big sultry soundscapes to get lost in.

I can also recomment David Parsons - Yatra.
