had a quick chat with ardvark audio this morning. very nice guy. the up shot being

the difference between a gen II and mine is slender and given mine is late ebo 4 1 it might well be gen 11 anyWAY. anyway the blue cap upgrade is worth doing but is cheap as chips (40/50 ukp plus carriage). They do it.

He mentioned a decent mains cable would be good though - any suggestions

If its possible, i would also consider having a spur for the power amp, and another for everything else.

FWIW, I prefer the older chipset.
Have both Gen/GenII at the mo, better improvents can be hard else where.
Mains leads that we've tried and work
Eupen (blue), Acoustic Zen Tsunamia/Gargantunana/Audience/KS audio the bright blue one/Ultra Khan ref statement II/Shunyata Tiapan, the rest of the range just bigged it up and slowed it down, I'm afraid.
VDH mainstream stuff/Cardas golden ref/Kimber Paladin/JPS aluminum thingy.
A few others too, but twould be inapproprate for me to mention then.
6mm John, do one for the B/c the other for the sources
It also responds well to stillpoints. should point you in the right direction. T.

Is it a gen I or II then? I was confused by the evo 4 that I recently bought second hand. It does not have Gen II on the back panel, but I understand from b/c that the early Gen II's didn't. I thought that if the serial number ended in m or n it is a gen II. Is this right? I noticed that b/c will upgrade a gen I to a gen II for a shocking $1000.

Does the Gen II have the blue cap upgrade you are refering to? Are the fabled blue caps the four capacitors on each board being dark blue?

    John,

I would try the A/z Tsunami around £120 imported or the Audience power leads, I believe Jack the Buscuit (Andy) may have one or 2 for sale.
The others I was going to mention are a little more in cost, though you'll need to change other stuff as well
Those 2 I mention give good results for a fair price. T.

I was told the caps do indeed have an improvement, but may well be B/S
same goes for the Audio AeroCapitole CDP, suposed to be a big improvment between the P4 chip and the new one, IMO complete B/S back to back no diffferance to my ear's
FWIW my Evo's got the blue chips & is a gen 2
John I,ve an Audiance powerchord you can try if you wish
the only 3 power cables that make any differnce to my ears are the above and shunyata Python, I'm using a King cobra at the mo, differance between the Python /cobra is minimal

kimber,Eupen and a couple of others added nothing

I'm in danger of talking to myself here, but no its not those capacitors, its the two smaller ones as explained fully in this article:

aaarvarc audio seem to think the cap upgrade is worth doing, that the gen 11 upgarde is marginal. they told me the cap upgrade is two caps per channnel and are even prepared to ship it as a kit if one is confident enough ( me not). They won't do a while you wait service so if I ever did it it would have to wait for a holiday.

hardvac do sell a mains lead that they rate with it and i might give 'em a call on that once i've a minute, and the thought and a phone collide

I have contacted Bel Canto about the gen I / II issue (amongst other things)

It seems that if the serial no ends m or n its got the new boards with the TA3020 chip set. The earlier ones had orange caps, but most were upgraded with blue caps. b/c seem to only consider it a gen II if it has the blue caps, and it should have a gen II sticker on the back.
