    Hello.

I went to my local cabinet maker, and asked him to give me a price on 4 'oak cones'.

I really need these, as my speakers need to be tilted back at an angle. I dont fancy using ugly blocks of wood, or books which is what Im using now!

Ideally I said, I wanted the cones made out of bits of walnut, to match the wood of the speakers.

About 3 inches tall with a rounded off point.

Maybe he's greedy, but he asked for...

    fifty quid!!!!!!!!!!!!

fifty five if I wanted the ends rounded off!!!!

    I think not.

Someone on here once said they got a local wood turner to knock a bunch up for a fiver.

Can anyone reccomend me a wood - turner who will charge more reasonable prices?

    Fingers crossed.
    Chris

    RA are 3 for 20.95!

much cheaper! never thought I'd say that!

mind you his are only about 1.5 inches.

but since when did wood cost so much!

think I'll sell that tree in the back garden, I'll be minted.. it's a special audiophile tree if anyone's interested..

Speak to Peter Stewart at HNE Systems. He made me a really nice six level granite and sycamore equipment rack and I know he has a lot of different wood finishes on offer. He may be able to help. Contactable on [email protected] or via his website:-

are they audiophile tree surgery skills?

    we can double our prices!

snoop, I have an HNE rack myself. great aren't they?

I feel though, I'm best off avoiding anything hifi, and just find a bloke that does a bit of woodturning. It must be a piece of p*ss little job.

Why not look in your local yellow pages for joiners and carpenters, it may be that if there are any who don't have much work on at the moment they will be glad of any penny's they can recieve to make a bit of extra money. Of course if they are busy they will tell you to p*ss off. That is why the other company wants £50, basicaly they don't want the hassle of doing it for anything less.

I think they would have been very surprised if you acepted the offer. My dads done it once a twice when he didn't want the job.

not being picky, but a carpenter/joinder wouldnt be able to do it, a turner is needed.
Some carpenters may have a lathe, but doubtful.

...and have you seen how much people pay for the used RA' cones on ebay,..ridiculous, seen many an auction close for same as new when postage is added!

There is a guy local to me who supplies Noteworhty Audio to mention only one audio store of several types of stands and racks, but he also supplies his own make of wooden isolation cone. I have never used them but Noteworthy rave about them everytime I go in there.

    http://www.noteworthyaudio.co.uk/Something_Solid.html

Failing that, all you realy need to do is go down to your local 'cottage-industry' type furniture maker, if they are turning spindles for reproduction antiques then they should easily be able to turn out a set of cones.

I know the joiners why my mate worked had a lathe, they could make all the spindles for stair wells etc. I am sure some of the people there would have done a back hander if the boss was out.

I bought my parts for my TNT flexy shelf from a turner, well they were called Turner's Fixings anyway (sorry bad joke) :MILD:

Its not as easy as it looks, making the actual cone shape is easy but separating the cones is hard, as is getting them flat enough and the right height. I made all my cones (loads- about 30 odd) from a piece of hardwood curtain pole I had lying about, it took a while.

50 quid seems cheap to make "oak" cones out of "walnut", you will be wanting wine made out of water next ;)
