Not sure if you've seen this, its from the TNT write-up of the Bristol show (all those months ago). It's a bit late, I know!

One of the best sounds of the show could be heard in Seventh Veil's room, through the energetic demoes of a very very very enthousiastic Steve Margolis. His Nonsuch 4 loudspeakers are tall columns made up of tens of ellips-shaped sections of wood glued together, giving an irregular inner volume, into which work four 2.5" wideband Bandor units in tandem. If desired, and it is, the Little Awesome passive subwoofers can be added to the mix, including the ABE valve bass equalizer. The result is a full-bodied, quite dynamic sound, warm, inviting, natural, ... all you wish. Except a lack of treble, only really heard on some types of music. Perhaps SV could consider blending in an optional ribbon tweeter to increase the marketing appeal of these fascinatig speakers?

Thanks for pointing that out, stumblin. Nice review.

Optional ribbon tweeter,eh? Well, I must admit that you do have to be sitting close to on-axis to get the high frequencies. I tend to voice speakers so that you're a few rows from the front, although I know some like to be sitting on the cymbols.

    - from a very, very enthusiastic...

Kick a man while he's up, why don't you?

Anyway, I object to the term 'demented'.

Yeah ok guys. How about we focus on the bit that says:

"The result is a full-bodied, quite dynamic sound, warm, inviting, natural, ... all you wish."

    Hi Steve,

Are you going to Heathrow this year? I thought I read you're not planning to demo, but if you are still going I'll look for the demented monkey on speed.

I will be there on the Friday after lunch.

PS - Say Hello to Robin from me and Penk :)

Steve, a well desevered review. Although I had to dissapear at official closing time on the Saturday, your room was definately the highlight of the day for me! It was also great to meet such forum legends as WM. A superb effort from all of those involved. Hopefully you'll be there next year - the Bristol Show is an annual pilgrimage for yours truly :)

Steve, what are the practicalities of voicing your speakers, if they have no xover to tweak and play with ie how do you?

nice to see things starting to happen btw :)

Of course I'm limited without having a crossover to a tweeter. My design choices revolve around the drive units and the enclosures.

With the drivers I can play with cone shape, anodising, gap size, magnets and spiders but, to be honest, the fruits of this work will appear on future models, rather than the present.

Selecting the wire for the voice coil and the impedance is important. I'm currently using a 4 ohm aluminium coil because it's the lightest and goes highest. When we get some time I'll get WM to provide me with some rather special stuff that he's dug up and we'll see what that does.

I use my own driver front plates so that I can get the drivers as close together as possible when I'm using an array of them. I also utilize a measured amount of C37 (magic lacquer from Austria).

With the enclosures, the internal design is probably more important than with a conventional 'tweetered' speaker as tweeters tend to be close-backed whereas mine are affected by the enclosure right up to 20kHz. Control of the reflections back through the cone is important as is control of standing waves (which is why I payed so much attention to the internal shape). Even with the slatted egg-shape design, some damping is required and you might be surprised the effect this can have on the general liveliness and voicing of the speaker.

    Well, since you asked. :)

    Someone's bound to ask...

    ...so I'll do the honours.

Steve, or someone with their I spy book of hi-fi (am I showing my age ?)

What is the rest of the kit, including stands and cables, in the photo ?

The stands caught my eye....after the speakers of course !
