With my nick I won't say a word about the subject, although I think that the best t..k ever is the correct placement of the speakers, or shall I say drivers in a room (if it could be qualified as a tweak). 95 per cent of all of us do not pay enough attention to it. But I am sure about one thing - if Romy The Cat starts indeed posting - we will have some havy artillery here :JOEL:

One t..ak worth considering for a tube amp input stage is Cool Dampers. It's a crime that manufactures tune they amps without cool Dampers in place.

Don't do it !! It will dampen the player and screw the dynamics.
As for cоnes - in my experience Clearlight RDC cones are the best cheap solution with ringing shelves, like glass or granite.

    OK, one more about cones.
We all know that wooden cones will smooth the sound but make it dull, the metal ones will tighten the bass, but annoyingly sharpen the treble, the composite ones may free dynamics and improve highs, but can make upper bass a bit too prominent. Solution - two metal cones and one composite (like RDC). Or two composite and one metal. It actually works.

do people who live on the top floor of high rise buildings have better isolation than people who live on the ground floor ?

' guess that depends on whether the builder has been thoughtful enough to use mdf/rubber+ mild steel in the construction....;)

    Not to push a point.....

My Dad gave me an old (oak) fenc epost last time I was up his way,

That has now turned into three x 6"X 5" (approx) cones.(under the slabs...pic above)

I might say that Charlie Haydn is ousnding very nice just now.

when time allows i'lll go a bit wild :D and faceplate -turn some stuff......see what that does....

Would agree that tweaking is as stress releasing as it comes. Have tried. Have tried wierd and wonderful range of household objects to isolate equipment placed on non too rigid glass shelf AV stand. One thing that does seem to have an effect, looks OK and is so cheap that it's a no brainer not to try it is pipe insulation foam. The stuff from Wicks I use comes as a long silver cylinder that can be sliced into feet to be placed under equipment. It's more rigid than you would expect. It surprisingly also seems to make a difference under speakers (between top of stand and speaker), though this could be to do with altering height.

Sorry I am new here but I fail to see what you are isolating the CD player from. Looking at DavidF's picture I presume he is on concrete floor (or has some worried neighbours underneath him) so I fail to see what vibrations he is getting through the floor. Am I being especially thick if I say that the CD player will have more vibration on Davidf's stand due to the out of balance rotation of the CD than if it was sat on the floor with a brick on it?

Surely, the best way to test the isolation of a product is to place a glass of water on it then jump up & down on the floor. If the water moves or ripples can be seen then there's room for improvement. Obviously, care must be taken not to spill any water onto electrical equipment.

I dont feel there is any consensus of opinion in regard of tweaks.

I fail to see what you are isolating it from - apart from someone jumping up and down next to it. Surely you should test the amount of vibration occurring whilst a CD is playing, then try to reduce that.

Agreed, place a glass of water on the cd player whilst playing a cd then jump up & down.

Firstly RF ,welcome to the forum.

Yes, I do have a concrete floor (and no I don't have worried neibhours).

    My intention was twofold;

    1) drain mechanical energy away from the cd player.

    2) to isolate the cd player from floor bourne + other vibrations.

I would be the firat admit that I am on a learning curve here.....are you saying that by having a concrete floor I have few concerns about surrounding vibrations?

Similarly, I am interested in your comment concerning "out of balance rotation".

    Could you explain, please?

As a matter of interest I ahve just spent most of the night googling the subject...i am very happy to be educated if you can put me right!

    cheers,

    David

    Is that what microphy means?

    I never realised....

As a just said to another contributor, I have just spent some time reading .......the plot thickens considerably.....

,,,,I know from the past 6 months something of what benefits can be gained.

Yes, but it ddin't work for me.

    Vibration dissipation woks better (IMO).

I suspect floor bourne vibrations are more subtle than that?
