If you have a dodgy knee I'm not sure it's a good idea to use running machine regularly. I'd try swimming (I know you don't like it:D) or cycling. My left knee starts to hurt after about 10-15 minutes of running, and that is with fairly well damped running shoes. With casual trainers it starts to hurt a lot earlier.

Of course you may have a different problem, in which case ignore the above.:D

the knees are soem thing of a paradox.....

crouching now is something beyond a joke...when the muscles are cold..

whether the docs suggestions acheive soem thing is another matter..hope so!

I didn't stop running 2 years ago because of knee pain...strangely enough it was never an issue then

Your woord s remind me very much of my brother who has run extensively in the past......and has one totally conked knee as a result.

...I'm also mindful of my UNCLE who likes to keep fit ...has alwaays had very similar knee issues to rich......so it seems (or COULD be) a family thing. theefor I am being a little cautious!

See if you can get a free trial at a local gym or YMCA, then you can try a few forms of exercise out before you settle on a garage machine. I had a Concept 2 rowing machine, I rue the day I got rid of it as my toes become less visible by the day when I'm standing up! In terms of an all over exercise it was awesome, and low impact, which I know as cyclist with a crappy left knee from a wallop a few years ago, as you can set the wind drag damping on the fan at the end, which also from memory keeps you quite cool too! You get arms, back, and abs sorted too!

TBH David, I'd join a gym and see how that pans out. I don't have much self descipline and I'm afraid having a machine sitting in a garage won't tempt me to exercise at all.

best thing to get, is someone to exercise with you.

Then, whether you gym/bike/swim or whatever, it will be hard to back out of it and you'll do it more regularly.

If you go with gym equipment, I'd reccomend a gym over home equipment. You'll use it for longer, the equipment will be better and more varied.

I have a concept 2 and despite rowing everyday for the past year I have maintained my weight of 15st plus a few pounds.

My heart rate at rest however has dropped from 98 to around 68.

Now I am trying to shed the pounds ;)

I was runners world and apparantly there is eveidence that states regular runners have less instance of knee pain/injury. Although I cannot find the quotes. I run regularly and find as body strength and condition improves, the pains and niggles reduce.

Join a gym or if you dont fancy constant boring useless exercise take up a sport or a martial art?
You then have goals, every time is different etc etc. Unlike the gym which i only use to support my martial arts training.

I'm not certain that i'm not the other way around , Dev.

I use to go to a local sports centre...

    http://www.lilleshall.co.uk/index2.html

...but I'm not certain it worked for me.

Running was good because I can nip out when I want.....1/2 there...1/2 hour back...and I'm done (I'm not especially competative about it, Dom). If i've got to get out to a swimming pool...it ain't going to happen. Maybe the same with a gym......

Thats why I was kinda thinking of the machine, its just dead convenient.

I could fancy doing a martial art, certainly.

    + I guess badmintons a thought.

Unfortuanetly (I think) you have to accept there are only a certain number of hours in a day, just the same as I could fancy renovating an old MGB, or learning to play the piano (again).

    Treadmill (n) Recreational skiving

But a decent pair of Saucony’s and hit the streets, or perhaps the grass.

As stated above, proper running is way beyond far superior than mindless moving on a treadmill. You actually have to do some work.

If you are worried about your knee (understandable) why not try rowing or swimming.

    swimming I find pretty tedious.....

take you point about running.....I agree.

but i am concerned that my knees are cureently trouble soem; i am now 43 years old (regretably... !); there is a history of wonky knees in the family (sems to be)

    rowings worth thinking about....

have YOU tried these concept machines? (or were you talking about river rowing?)

    cheers

You went to Lilleshall? I live not far from there, nice place.

Seriosly, get your core and length strength up and you will be back running free in the wild before you can say 'x country is fun'.

Sorry, I am not the gorgeous young lady we all lusted about during the mid nighties, and the real reason men watched Gladiators !

I find the Concept rowing machines very good, years ago I used them a lot.

For actual fitness, they excellent, I think you will be hard pushed to find anything much better for all round fitness. However the failing for me, is the sceneray does not change.
