I wouldn't dismiss treadmills given the existence of the knee issue - if you're fit and well they're not as good as free running, but they're good as a way back into it. I ripped my cartilage last year during karate, and after some physio was recommended the treadmill, as the suspended rubber mat is very kind on your joints compared to paths, and stable compared to grass. I'd been used to running on paths so was sceptical but became a convert. It is much easier on your knees and I find, as a 'non-natural runner', that I can push myself harder using the incline and speed - I will sprint on and off on the treadmill whereas I feel a prat doing it on the pavement.. I've also got a Concept 2 in my home gym - again very smooth and gives an all over workout. Also you can do it in front of the telly....

Get on a bicycle and ride up some hills. This is amazingly effective.

Walkings not too much of an issue.

I'm lucky enought to live in a fairly rural area and can go for a walk up the road for an hour if i need to, though I ahve to say it isn't a particularly riveting occupation. B*****y boring actually. I do do it htough if I feel I neeed to stretch my legs abit.

Another vote for the concept 2.

    Got a bike.....its ok if it dry.....rain isn't so good. :(

Doesn't get the same level of fitness as runnning.....time/time.

    Neither does walking of course.

    (I didn't use to worry too much rain when i was running....10 mins and you'd warmed up any way....provided it wasn't too much}

I agree though that the bike is a hot contender for the mo'. Certainly wouldn't do any harm.

Find a really big, steep hill and cycle up it in the highest gear you can manage (without damaging your knees, obviously). Don't stop on the way up, just pedal.
For anyone who wants to lose weight, this really, really works.
I don't know about the same level of fitness time/time, but I suspect a lot depends on how hard you can run or cycle.

just get some asics running shoes after consulting a "proper" running sports store and purchase based upon video analysis....(lots of places do this now) and forget the running machine....do 4 weeks of weights to build up the muscles that stabilise the knee joint ie quads ( a good physio will explain) and youll be back to running in no time.....the muscles here waste easily as you progress in years and need constatnt attention....running does very little for them as the knee never replicates the angles required to strengthen these muscleswhen running...it is therefore like checking your tyres / water on a car...a ball-ache but really quite necessary. I run , and have 2 bad knees...last year I couldnt manage 3 miles on the road...im now up to 10 miles..and this was down to a good "pre-season weights programme"

    Wecome!

Gotta be convenient for me.....and quick...

Some one suggested finging a steep hill and cycling up and down it.....I'm going to try that......mind i've got to get that far....Ive lost the plot totally now.

the Docs put me on anti inflammaty stuff....400mg ibuprofen....and this starting to work.

    Fingers crossed!

I just took the bike out for 3/4 hour this p.m.....

    OMG!!!

    Absolubly hopeless.

Just shows how much you loose the plot.......my legs feel like I've just run a marathon. I think it needs to be regular thing.

that's it, don't do so much that you can't move for a week... get out there, it's brilliant.

take it easy on the hills, just keep a slow but steady pace and you'll get fitter.

    speed comes with time...etc..

Yes, that was the big risk.

After not very long my legs were stating to ache quite badly and I knew from running I had got to take it gently from there, else I wouldn't get out again for a week. I've got a few days now so i'll get a few more in before work again.

The Doc said tobuild up my quads to help my knees ....remind me ...will cycling help with that?

    cheers

I always did enjoy cycling (except in the rain....) so these summer days are ok....doing the lanes around here.

The winter is now something of a question mark I guess.....just ahve to save up for the row machine!! ;)
