HFN is a shadow of it's former self and the latest issue is an embarrassment to the art of audio journalism.

Is it really any better or worse than the other mags? Stereophile, absolute sound and hifi plus are all far worse. The latest moves seem to be sideways rather than up or down, it was never that great to begin with.

    Tony,

my guess is it's days are severely numbered. The quality of review has gone down the pan. It's pandering to a few select advertisers and allowing utter nobodies like David noCock to fill their pages with the ramblings of an adolescent anorak.

I really could not believe how poor as directionless the latest issue was, and yes BBV, it is far worse than the serious publications you mention.

    Dead right.
It could always be relied upon for decent in depth reviews and comprehensive measurements, even if we did have to suffer KK.
    Pile of shite now.

<jesus, I'm agreeing with Mike - check pulse, temperature and be sure to visit doctor in the morning> ;)

Alcock's the only "journo" I've seen at shows collecting brochures and carrier bags whilst answering to the name "spotter".

This month they manage to devote four pages to the Heathrow Show without visiting the decent one, give the thumbs up to a CD player from a company that's gone awol, criticise a 7wpc amp for lacking absolute bass control into some Spendors, and offer a particularly naive review of a couple of Clearaudios hurredly bashed out by Michael Bolton's deaf brother.

Oh and devote 10 pages to reviewing a group of aging HDTV's that were in the serious mags months ago. As the banner says - " Pure Audio Excellence"

....and it seems to be printed on toilet paper which is rather fortunate given that the toilet is the best place for it.

i gave up buying hfn a long time ago - in fact i haven;t bought a hi fi mag for quite a while. according to them, because my music is streamed off a hard drive it's not 'proper hi-fi' also because i don;t listen to the same interminable classical dross recorded by different composers or obscure jazz my musical taste isn't a valid one.
the closest was hi-fi world when they were doing the pc audio section but even they seem to have veered back off up their own arses.

Serious publications? There are none they are all a joke - and hifi plus is by far the worst. A cross between pravda and the beano with glossy pics.

HFN needs a real kick in the balls, if its true KK is editor (shurely shome mishtake?), maybe it will raise the game.

HiFi plus really annoys me, endless speaker reviews, kit you cant buy/audition in UK, RGs pet brands etc...nice format on nicepaper tho'

HiFi world...good as long as you dont let them batter you over the head with endless RB250/300/origin live arms are the best reviews

    HiFi choice: clag

Stereophile: went off the rails when it change format from A5

Absolute sound?: a shadow of a facsimile of a cardboard cut out

    best hifi mags are german
