HiFi+ is the best of a bad bunch if you ask me. I like the in-depth 6/8 page reviews on impossibly expensive kit! They also have the most comprehensive music reviews of all the mags (which isn't saying much, but it's still useful).

Like all the mags, they have biases towards a certain distributors and manufacturers, but otherwise I find it the most intelligent read of the lot. Some of the articles on recording studios and pressing plants have been well researched and quite interesting. Their interviews are also good (Pierre Boulez this issue).

Also like HiFi World for all its geeky DIY/anorak/budget charm.

Despite HiFi+ awarding gongs to £40k speakers and £10k amps, they also awarded them to very affordable kit like the Melody SP3, CA Azur 640 and Bewitched amp, so maybe they're not all that stuck-up after all....

All of it from a handful of distributors that also provide all of the advertising revenue. An examination of where the magazine sprang from would proove illuminating I feel. I feel its reviews are the most biased and least relaible of any hifi mag by a long chalk.

Late breaking news: The sky wasn't all that blue round my way today, more grey in fact. Have to admit that the grass was indeed green though. ;) .

/Pedant: I think you will find that it was in fact the clouds that were grey. The sky is still blue.

I just looked out my window, and the sky is now completely black apart from some twinkly stars. Not even a hint of blue :D. Clear proof that the sky is not blue, it's just a trick of the light, ha ha.

late breaking news - refracting atmosphere makes sky look blue during the day. other colours may be available due to low light or pollution levels.

    update: water, wet!

In certain instances, yes. Intelligent readers ought to be aware of these potential biases (not difficult really; glowing review followed by a full page ad? Pure co-incidence of course  ) and should know which distributors and cable manufacturers are favoured parties by now ;)

Having said that, HFW seems to be very cosy with a certain Scottish distributor (though one whom I acutally like) and a certain DIY amp concern.

To be honest, if you're basing your buying decisions based on some of the megabucks kit sourced from from these distributors, you really ought to hear it for yourself. Unless, that is, you blindly trust these mags? :(

I actually think HiFi + gives space to more product from more sources than any other mag I can think of, so I think BBV's comments are way off target. Name a distributor that hasn't had a Plus review.

Name a distributor with advertising that has had a bad review - its just a glossy sales brochure for distributors.

Surely that's because seperates costing £2k+ can't possibly be bad? :)

    BBV,

Bad reviews don't get published in magazines. What Plus has is an ability to put the sonic characteristics of equipment into words that those who are likely owners can understand. I generally find the reviews to be accurate in these terms - which shows the quality of journalism to be high. Of course, if you just pan the rag for giving good reviews without listening to the kit yourself you would not apreciate that.
