Mrs Tones would love it! She hates speakers and wasn't happy when the Keilidhs replaced the LS3/5As in No.1 system.

Not just Mrs Tones, Tones. I think these have the greatest WAF ever. Wonder how it sounds.

The Mrs must really dislike speakers. To my eyes the Keilidhs are better looking box then many others and considering the don't need to be place way out into the room as well to sound good is a real bonus.

If it really sound any good I wonder what would we all do with these wooden boxes other then makes rabbit hutch. Maybe we could propose to the other half rather then throw them out we could convert them into extra storage compartment for their shoes that way they might just allow us to keep them in HER livingroom.

My suspicions were raised a little by the comment that you could wall-paper over them. It may be a marketing thing though. It's not easy to satisfy the 'lifestyle' and the audiophile markets with one product.

Agreed, Wolfgang, but to Mrs. Tones, a box is a box. I've never confessed to her my secret desire to have a set of Quad electrostatics - this would certainly constitute grounds for divorce. Instead of "the other woman", it would be "the other speakers"!

I really don't understand this 'waf' thing. If I was a woman, I'd be pleased that the old man was at home tinkering/nerding with his model railway or hi-fi, rather than out on the razzle eyeing young ladies.

In which case, James, ol' bud, thank your lucky stars that you have such a compatible she-Devil. And you gotta remember that, one day, you'll be as ancient and decrepit as I and young ladies simply laugh at you and try to kick away your walking sticks. In which case the wife wishes you would go out, because she knows nobody's in any danger!

Surely you could point out that the Quads are neither a box nor a box?

The Wharfdale flat speakers are like picture frame and can have real pictures in them, but even so the idea of wallpapering "NXT" style speakers sounds (forgive the pun:p ) like putting a blanket over normal speakers.

It's the question of physical size that's the problem, Pete. The Keilidhs are at least slender, elegant boxes (well, insofar as any box can be elegant). The Quads are like a couple of large (and not at all elegant) firescreens. Moreover, no way could they sit in close proximity to the walls as do the Keilidhs. I think I'd need a separate listening room. The daughters' rooms would be the best candidates, but at their present rate of progression, they should leave home and become independent by the time I'm about 300.

I see - by that time, the chances you'll need your speakers to be playing at SPLs rather higher than the Quads are capable of :D

And I'll be too busy retuning my harp to bother with hi-fi.

As a sidenote, I tried a pair of the Wharfedale NXT speakers, as I thought my mother might like a pair.

Frankly they were completely outclassed even by a pair of Denon SCM51s, which cost 1/5th of the RRP for the Wharfedales.
Apparently NXT speakers struggle in the bass. So one of the problems was using a sub in parallel, which really was fairly tosh.

I've got some 2" thick speakers on the drawing board, designed for wall mounting. Naturally I'm very disappointed that the NXTs are such wash outs. :D
