    ....over here?

    Hi

Talking to a colleague last shift, he reckons he formats his computer(s) .....four of them.....every six months.
    Is this a worth-while excercise?

    What do you guys do?

    Buy a computer.

Use it until it's either too small, too slow, or breaks.

    Repeat.

Formatting is a cowboys way out it also causes a lot of hassle. I only ever format my PC if my hard drive is failing, e.g I need a new hd.

My PC never runs slow because I maintain it well. It was last formated two years ago, I have a AMD 4200 x2 processor, 2.5 GB RAM and its super quick even with Vista.

However if a clients computer is full of viruses and has other windows problems such as random crashing, I will format it after a load of checks (hard drive, RAM etc) prove the hardware is in good order.

I built my PC myself to my own spec and know it as well as it's possible to. I reformat every year.

Yes, absolutely. If it ain't broke, smash it to smithereens and find out why.;)

    Alternatively....

If you want a trouble-free PC you only need two things - good security software and 'ccleaner' (run it once a week at the default settings and just say yes to all the prompts!). My laptop is now over two years old and runs as well now as it did on day one.
