I've got one of their albums called 'Lifeforms', which is fairly interesting. This was actually the first cd i ever bought, back in 1994, following a review in Q magazine. It must have rattled my young bones, as i didn't really buy cd's again until many years later, and i began to indulge in other dodgy youthful enterprises soon afterward. Anyway, 10 years after FSOL ruined my life, i've made a sudden return to it after a random stroll through my cd collection. And its not unpleasant.

On Amazon it reckons that other folk who bought this album also purchased stuff by these:

    Orbital
    The Orb
    Amorphous Androgynous
    Autechre
    Aphex Twin

Is there anything i should look at first? Or any other suggestions, or indeed any FSOL albums which are equally good. I am more familiar with the soles of my feet than i am with this 'genre' of music, so any guidance that you could provide for me is greatly appreciated.

    cheers

    cookie,
FSOL - accelerator. includes the classic papua new guinea.

orbital - pretty much any but my favorite is orbital 2 as it includes halcyon (and on and on) the altogether is also pretty good as a starting point. there is also a compliation called works which may be a good starting place if you haven't heard them before.

the orb - orblivion is ok and had a weird remix of jean michelle jarre's oxygene called toxygene. the orbs adventures in the ultraworld (?) is ok iirc as i don;t currently have it and includes the classic little fluffy clouds. there are a couple of decent orb compliations about too which may be worth checking out first.,

aphex twin - if you like them, then great if not then you'll hate them. i'd suggest the collected ambient works 1 album as a place to start as this i feel is his most accessible stuff. druqks is mental.

you may also want to try, squarepusher, u-ziq, photek, and susumo yokota. square pusher and photek lean more towards avante guarde d'n'b. u-ziq and squarepusher are contenders for aphex twins 'maddest of the mad award' and yokota is beautifully chilled ambience.

    good luck
    cheers

    Thanks for the reply Julian.

Considering that i haven't got a clue what i'm getting into, i'm just going to get one cd to start with and see how that goes.

Taking your advice and reading up on the albums you've mentioned, i'm going to go for either Orbital 11/Orbital or Selected Ambient Works Vol2/Aphex Twin. The Orbital one is only £7.99 so i'll probably go for that one i reckon.

    cheers

    dino,
selected ambient works vol II is druqks like in it's madness the aphex twin, i'd say, is the best to ease you in gently is selected ambient works 85-92. tbh i'd go for the orbital.
    cheers

i introduced chris to the marvels of aphex twin last night. a couple of tracks from i care because you do convinced him that aphex twin is indeed mad. helosphan from selected ambient works 85-92 went down quite well though - of course chris could have just been being polite. but it sure is more accessible than most other things at's done. it has a tune and everything.
    cheers

    Cheers Neil.

I'll give them a pop next time i see you.

Can't remember the Aphex Twin. Nicotine deprivation must have been playing with my mind. I'll give it another hearing though next time.
