Yes I have heard the top spec linn - last time was two years ago. I assume that would be the spec you described. It doesnt sound that much different to my friends 20 yo model with an ittok. Sorry but I beleive the limitations are due to the basic construction - which hasnt changed.

yes the lp12 can not perform any more than it did in 1974, due to lack of engineering and materials, every time i so called UPGRADED mine it seemed to get worse,

as they say the deck is the most important part if that is not right then nothing will help, i have had 4 of the things and i think that says it all i think

in fact i tried it against a technics 1200 and that deck destroyed it by quite a margin.

and the 1200 is an appauling deck, when we compaired them it was done under blind conditions and everyone aggreed the technics was superior. far more rythmic and dynamic.
now what can you say about that then

if you have an lp12 sell it a buy a planner 3.
it has a far better sound and put a good cartridge on it and your singing.
i tried mine with a van den hul with great results. so good in fact it makes you wonder about spending to much on a deck at all

Not replacing yet, trading TT and speakers towars a newer pair of speakers, will get another TT in the future, LP was secondary source for me, tecnodec was well outclassed by my CDP, may get oracle, VPI or something like that in future, not sure will dem when funds available.

If your interest is in listening to hi-fi and not music then the LP12 has been left behind. There are lots of better engineered, better looking and better measuring decks. Few of them play music properly. Modern decks that do play music are better than the Linn.

Ah, but John, there are PLENTY of places with ads for LP12s - are you suggesting that ANY thread dissing ANY product that MAY or may not be advertised here or somewhere else shouldn't be allowed to be run?

    Do me a favour...

As for the LP12, yeah, I do prefer my Rega to the one I heard when I dem'd it, but I've also heard the odd (well, two) LP12s that I would consider owning. I'd not want to pay the market price for them though - too expensive for what you get soundwise.

Henryt bought an LP12 in 1998 - I *told* him to audition Michell too but he didn't. A year down the line, he got an Orbe... Which he still has :)

I know my Planar 3 isn't the best deck on earth (or anywhere near it!), but to better it would cost around £500, which I'd rather spend on more music, as it's "good enough" with a Flutterbuster PSU. I'd not mind a new cartridge though :)

BTW - Alex S's deck is one of these modern, "more musical than Linn" decks - his deck kicks arse - especially on a certain ABC record :)

There is no problem stating your view on a component. However slagging something off ON THE advert isn't polite.

It was my ad and I have joined in this thread but you have to have respect if someone is trying to sell something on the actual advert itself. All I asked was that the part of the thread with the expressing of views by others NOT interested in purchasing the deck was moved to the hifi part and not on my ad.

A moderator did this, he did not censor any of it and simply moved it and the discussion has subsequently continued. For that I thanked him.

Griff is to be commended - many people would have been annoyed first by the hijack and secondly would defend the linn frothing at the mouth. That he did neither is very much to his credit.

i would keep the planner you have to spend at least £1500 to better it ,i have just compaired it to the gyro sme v and there is not that much in it, the best thing you could do is an origin live on the arm, well worth doing as you can allways keep the 300 and put on a better deck later.
