Kenny, whatever you do, don't put a Linn cart on it, you'd be so unhappy.

Anyway, the Shiraz can be rebuilt, which is probably your cheapest option. Or are you after a change in sound?

I might be. what I really want is a soundstage that is so holographic to be able to almost walk between the instruments. :)

The Morch unipivot sounds very good with the Orbe [heard with Benz & Koetsu]. I can't promise a "holographic" soundstage, though.

Dust is a problem, however £44 for a unicover to keep the dust of the platter and give some protection to the arm. Thankfully the Dorian as a very good stylus cover which I keep on when not in use.

The clamp is a pain but surprising how quickly you get used to it. When you see a dodgy warped record sitting smack bang against the platter the hassle seems worthwhile.

There are a lot of similarities between the Orbe and LP12, imo, which is probably why I like the Orbe so much. Certainly in my system and environment it does better MY LP12.

Personally I've never understood this. In all my life listening to live music I've never once experienced this hi-fi thing where all the instruments sound to be playing in a little bubble. The best real-life sound I've heard is from an all audio-note single ended set up, with their Snell copy speakers. Trouble is it wouldn't do for everyone, I'm not even sure it would do for me.

Try this. Buy tickets for an orchestral concert sitting not in the stalls, but fairly central and high up. Wait for on of the woodwind instruments to start playing a solo, do you get a sense of depth or how far away the instrument is?

Soundstage is actually quite a manufactured concept IMHO. I think instruments should be tonally accurate, and realistic, but not artificially placed somewhere in a big space. If you want to hear fabulously naturally recordings, try to get hold of some of the Mercury recordings that were made in the sixties in their original pressings. They have depth and space and all the rest, and by god do they sound real!

That's the entire problem with people talking about "the LP12", "Naim amplifiers", etc. There are so many different specs, but people hear one or two examples, and extrapolate.

    Hi there

I was asking Nick - but always good to find another person who is happy with his deck.

The Arkiv has not been made for about four years, so if that was the last one you have heard then it will probably not have had the Lingo 2 which, like I said, is a big step forwards. The Akiva is becoming recognised as one of the best cartridges in the world - I do not think that anyone who has heard it can say they are less than astonished at it ( save Trolls, of course )

If you have found your ideal deck then good news - the path can be a long one and it looks like you blew 20 years getting there.

I was impressed by the Morch I heard, to be honest, but I'm sticking with my Linn for now.

    Regards

    Mike

I've never understood this soundstage stuff.

I love listening to music but live music is the best - no hifi can recreate it and when you realise that you can just get on and enjoy both.

I'm off to the Riga bar tonight to watch The Hamsters and drink beer - exactly how music should be.

You have to be very careful with statements like that ;-).

neither did I, until I heard it properly for the first time. it was a Tabla on a Tony McManus CD, I could almost reach out and touch it with my eyes closed.

No, I don't know what you mean. Linn used to make the Arkiv, now they have the Akiva, so which?

i had the arkiv about 8 years ago on an ekosed and lingoed lp12. i cannot see the latest one being much better, you are much safer buying a van den hul they are all hand built jewels, and are retipable when the time is needed, so that makes them a good investment

I agree that the Arkiv was justly unloved. The new Akiva is completely different. You ought to check it out, I was quite surprised.

The Ekos is not a favourite of mine, and neither is the old Lingo. I am not very surprised that you didn't like your Linn.
